Nikon D700 - Useful Advice?

Thu Mar 19, 2009 10:55 am

I've just picked up a Nikon D700 camera. I've used Nikon before so I already feel like I've had the camera for a long time, it feels familiar and I feel I know what most of the features do without going near the books (which I will do shortly for a few hours).

But I wanted to ask if there are any D700 users here - and if they had any helpful advice on settings in the camera, what works, what should be avoided, etc. I haven't really taken any proper photos with it yet - though I intend to when I get a chance.

I plan to keep the D700 with my 300mm Nikkor prime lens (they are a obvious match), while the D80 goes in for a check-up, and then keep the D80 going for as long as practical with the "Bigma" lens (avoid the dust problem altogether).

But I was wondering, the Sigma 50-500mm lens, if I were to use that with a D700, will it have to be run with the mode to support the "DX" type lenses? And if so, will the results be worth the bother of that. I've read a lot about the quality still being quite okay, but given it was general photography magazine speak, rather than a.net standards involved - I'm a little suspicious.

How about the vignetting with your lens? Lots of opinions about the D700.

You can try to use DX lens with the D700 and you can get a large black frame on your photos when not in DX mode.

Apart from that the D700 is a great camera.

Hold the camera steady. If you pan, pan smoothly.

Everything works on this camera.

No problem, the Bigma is designed for 35mm format.
In fact all Sigma's of the DG type are(DC is meant for APS/c).

The 50-500 is a full frame lens and doesn't need DX crop mode.

First impressions after taking some photos of some wet plant leaves in the garden (300mm+D700 at ISO200, F/11 at 1/125sec, hand-held) is that the quality of the images are superb, really superb - there is no noise in the image, it is crystal clear and quite sharp even at full resolution (no resize).

Very, very impressive. Everything seems very good with this camera. I could see the difference immediately on this camera.  Smile

I think the vignetting with the 50-500mm is just one of those things that I'll live with and fix up in photoshop. I know the D700 does have vignette control - but I'm still very suspicious of automatic systems. Maybe that will change in the future.

I'm very interested in the AF fine-tune feature.
