Personal Messages - Please Take Note

Thu Apr 02, 2009 4:39 pm

Hi All

To improve our screening process and the feedback you receive we have decided to start working with abbreviations in personal comments. This will allow us to send far more personal messages than before.

For you this means you will need to be aware of the meaning of the abbreviations. For now we have decided to start using 3 very common ones. Hopefully in the near future we can expand this to encompass many more personals, and all abbreviations should be in our upload guide.

For now though

CW - Clockwise rotation needed

CCW - CounterClockwise rotation needed

HH- Heathaze/jetwash

If you know any members who do not frequent the forum please let them know.

Hope this helps

The A.net Screening Team

Sounds like a good idea. The first two are pretty self-explanatory I think.

It might be an idea to list these abbreviations here:

Personal is currently not explained here at all, which raises a standard question here in the forum every week or so  Wink

Also could be included in the e-mail, or will this few extra bites generate too much traffic when used in thousands of mails?

Start? I have received these abbreviations in my rejection email for quite some time.

Sure does!

PS: A frequently asked question for "contrast"-rejection is "is there not enough contrast or is there too much contrast" (eg C+ or C- could help out  Smile ... and reduce the number of posts).

Great idea. It is definitely better to receive abbreviated messages than no messages at all.

Another rejection that is often quite obscure is 'motive'. Some photos are rejected for 'motive' for an awkward crop and therefore salvageable. How about maybe using a single word 'CROP'?

Some messages could also be suggested for 'editing', like 'HALO', etc.

Cheers,
Andrei

Exactly right. Good idea.

Perhaps even C++ (for lots more contrast needed) or C+ for a little bit more contrast, etc.

Would that mean the images has too much contrast or needs more contrast?  Wink

Just curious - has anyone received these abbreviated messages? Seemed like a good idea; pity if it didn't take off.

In line of the comments;

I got one (for category) a few days ago, but with an acceptance! I don't know who the screener in question was, but just wanted to let you know that that action was much appreciated  Smile

I've received plenty or rejections with and without personal messages; here, I'm just wondering whether the abbreviated messages are going to become common (and consistent) practice, or it was just a good but un-workable idea.

I don't know that all screeners are using abbreviated messages.

I prefer to type mine out, I think a few others feel the same way.

Agreed. It's amazing what even a few words can do to change the tone and put a positive spin on a rejection.

Once or twice, after receiving a rejection with no remark at all, I've gotten frustrated with dealing with the photo and have given up in exasperation.

But with a remark along the lines of "Nice shot, but it's a bit too _______", I feel a lot more motivated to go that extra mile, make some changes, and have another go at it.

Guys, you missing my point. I much prefer the non-abbreviated messages myself. Unfortunately though, I rarely get them.

What I'm talking about is that abbreviated messages are better than no messages at all; it is abbreviated ones versus "no messages'. If a screener feels like typing out - great, I guess nobody could keep him from that.

But if the screener feels like he is pressed for time and ordinarily would write nothing at all, typing a widely understood abbreviation would only take a split second, but the photographer would still get his vital piece of information.

Cheers,
Andrei

Why not make them rejection reasons? Rather than have general "angle" simply have two: CCW and CW?

Good idea, but I don't think they are quite ready yet to make any major changes before most bugs are fixed. In the meantime, abbreviations could be a nice compromise.
