JFK Interesting Spotting Location

Thu Apr 23, 2009 7:45 am

Just wanted to share with you two spotting location's I've discovered in JFK that haven't really been aforementioned on this site (at least to my knowledge). The 5th floor of the parking garage at T8 provides excellent rotation shots for A/C taking off on 31L, and if 13R was used for landing touchdown shots and flaring shots would also be possible from this location. I would show you some photos, but because I'm new here I just uploaded them not long ago. Another location, although minor picture obstruction occurs due to the proximity of the gate is the passenger loading area of the new T5. the sidewalk juts out closer to the tarmac at this point and provides unobstructed views (a fence is much lower on the bottom roadway) to B6 a/c at gate 1 as well as T4 aircraft. Just wanted to share these locations with you guys, although in the end they do not beat Rockaway blvd. and firestone  Smile

Don't the police move you along from the car parks at JFK... well anywhere at JFK?

Interesting information, thank you for sharing. What size lens is optimal from these locations?

from T8 and T5 i used a Canon 80-200mm and a 75-300mm producing fairly clear and nice results. BTW, I use a Digital Rebel XTI, im saving up for a 40D  Smile

And to OLY, surprisingly they were very friendly when I was there. I chatted with the security guard who patrolled that lot and he said it's great i'm into aviation and such, and said if I recieve any complaints from patrons I should direct them to him. He was the nicest security guard I've ever met!

Security can't be any worse than Boston's Terminal B garage, but there the risk is worth the effort, and these spots might fall into the same category. I'll give these spots a try on my next JFK visit and thanks again for the tips.

I would think that parking garage is probably an early morning spot as you would be shooting into the sun in the afternoon no?
Hey that guy with the private jet can bail us out! Why? HE CAN AFFORD IT!

Eh, its a give or take. I was shooting around 3-5pm with moderate clouds and the sun was mainly behind me so not that big of an issue, although more preferably this spot should be frequented earlier in the day or on day's where it is not as sunny, Although overall I did get good results even with the sun creeping into my shot at times although it was very high in the sky. and yes, I do think these spots are worth the effort!  Smile the private security contractor for the parking facilities at JFK overall are nice, I've spotted from not only T8's but 3's, 4's and 1's and have never run into significant problems, in fact my only problem ever occurred when I took a photo of the check in desks at T4 and was told I could not photograph such things and should refrain from doing so.

Great to hear, after all the tales of woe we get from American airports. Perhaps the tide is turning....

Hmm I was there three days in a row (alebit in 2007) and was free to stay anytime I wanted, most of the guards were very friendly and let me stay as I wish.

In fact I almost missed my flight home because I was tempted to shoot too long  Wink

Very lovely place up there in the afternoons!
