Which Sort Of Photo Best Represents Your Style?

Fri Jun 05, 2009 2:49 pm

Hi all. I've noticed a few of you on here have a certain style you seem to like. It could be side-ons, dusk shots, rampers, rotations or even contrails. But some of you always seem to return now and again to your, what seems to me, favourite kind of image. I'm not sure what kind represents my style of photography, as I have tried so many different things over the years, but I quite like the sunrise ILS stuff, where multiple ac are on the approach. What's yours?

Spence, first of all, I admire your work greatly. I have been trying to shoot lineups like that at LAX and finding a location seems impossible. How do you do it so well?

Hard to pick a style, but I'd go with this type:

I'm not too sure if I have a preference, I seem to go through phases of side-ons, rotation, landing, approach! At the moment, it's approach. I love this angle:

My favourite? Definitely perfect side-ons of aircraft rotating or touching down - preferably at my local airport (MAN) as the photo-spots are just so amazing!

I also quite like shooting aircraft side-on on finals, but I prefer a little background.

I like ramp shots too, although obviously they are harder to achieve for various reasons. Not being restricted means you can use wider angles and get into more prime positions, resulting (in my opinion) in much better blue skies and better overall colour and contrast.

Back in the old days, when the database had far fewer images, I began uploading a number of images characterised by their low perspective and 3/4 type of angle. I don't know where it came from, but I began to refer to them as a "worm's eye view", and that stuck.

Even though there are now even more photographers at MAN than before I am still suprised that more don't make it though the undergrowth to get this perspective. For me the closeness to the taxiway, plus being level with the wheels, adds to the drama of a taxiing shot (and is a real bonus for Manchester photographers).

This same position also allows this kind of close crop, which has always been a favourite of mine:

Nice thread Spence!

I used to be totally obsessed with head-on shots, preferably also with good backdrop, I guess INN and SMV just work nicely for that.

Call this a self plug thread if you want, this is the first thread I've read all the way through in forever. Good idea Spencer.

When it comes to airliners I love a good tight 3/4 shot, back or front, doesn't matter.

I doubt anyone will recognize this as my style, but I'm fond of this afternoon spot in AMS, the touchdown zone of Rwy 18R. Somehow not too many people make it there, probably because it involves a bit of walking/cycling.

Well, hopefully you all won't mind a newb posting in here. I'm still learning but, as for a "style" I like departure shots where there's a background to them.

I'd add the image so it could be viewed inline but, it seems the upload is broken as I get the default image after uploading it.  Sad

Here's a link to it though.

Nice thread, Spence!

Not sure that I have a certain style (since I get a lot of motive rejects, that's probably it  Smile , but I cannot post these...).

Some that got on here and I have a personal preference for are the close-ups with my tele-zoom, such as:

For me the background plays a huge part in the photo. I like different angles and trying to show off the beauty of the north. Working at the airport allows me a lot more freedom to wait until the aircraft are in some nice lighting with a great background.

Antique aircraft, warbirds, GA are my priority; but, generally, anything flying deserves admiration and a shot in the DB, IMHO:

I wish I had more interesting places to shoot at my home airport but funnily enough the majority of my pictures on here haven't come from AKL. I really wish I could find some more exotic angles at home but it's just not pratical. I have to travel quite some distance to get some nice pics!

Nice thread Spence!  Smile

I must say I don't really have a favorite style. I like to try all kinds of different angles and lighting conditions and I think my portfolio shows that very well.
However if I had to cut it down to a few chosen ones I'd say that shooting warbirds with turning props and nicely illuminated aircraft with a dark cloud background are my favorites; I sadely don't often enough get the occasion to do so.

I don't prefer one style to the next TYPICALLY. But, if I had to choose, I would go for the somewhat tight crop 3/4 shot if at all possible. And without a doubt, the cockpit shot! Love the flightdecks on airplanes.
