Photo Of Two QF 747s In "Editor's Choice"?

Tue Jun 16, 2009 1:20 pm

I keep seeing this photo in the "Editor's Choice" section. What is noteworthy about this specific photo that makes it an "Editor's Choice" pick? I do realize that the photo is from the early days of A.Net, but it is the 5197th photo, not the first.

I am not trying to be snide or critical, or offensive. There are other photos by the photographer that are very unique such as one of AF1 at LAX in 1998, but I was not able to discern what is exceptional in this photo of the two QF 747s.

Thanks in advance for your explanations.

Probably Johan thought it was cool with 2 Qantas 747's side by side, and at that time it was also a pretty good quality shot. Digital cameras were scarce, and scanners left a couple of things to wish for as well. Today it would have been rejected, but in another 10 years todays "Editors picks" will also be frowned upon.

If you go to the photo search engine and under "Category" select "Editors Choice Selection" which is at the bottom of the pull-down list , leave the default sort by "Latest Additions First", and then go to the last page of the results, then this two QF 747 photo is seen on that last page.

So, yes this photo must be amongst the oldest accepted photos that are tagged with Editors' choice. However, if you compare with the other photos of similar vintage on the last page of results, one could objectively say that this QF 747s photo is really not at the same level as the others of the same vintage with the Editors Choice tag. So perhaps you are right that it was unique at the time in that it showed two QF 747s side by side.

After I started this thread, I noticed that there are two anonymous comments against the photo commenting on the same issue. I did not write either of those comments.

Check out this thread. It sounds like in the near future they will be redoing the Editor's Choice section. I've graciously volunteered my photos  Smile

Since a lot of those old images has corrupted entry dates I suspect they are shown on the "latest additions" which they shouldn't be.

I believe the editors choice will be redone soon.

However, I think that todays photos will remain much better, because there are stricter standards today. You can't have a photo that isn't level, and a shot like the one above would never get in because the nose is chopped off.

Images taken now don't have those kinds of glaring issues, so they'd probably stand against the test of time a bit better.

I hope that none of the images from the early years of A.net get removed. IMHO, the 'Editors Choice' section illustrates the history of the site; looking at those photos one can see how the site progressed, and also how the aviation photography was rapidly changing in the recent years with the introduction of digital technology.

Imagine a couple of EK 380s photographed in a similar fashion, side by side. (with the nose cut off). Since there is no such photo in the database, it may be accepted, but 3 years on, it would seem ridiculous.

It wouldn't be - it would be instant motive rejection.
