D200 FEE Message

Hello,

While out taking some pictures this morning with my D200 and 300 F4 AF-S, coupled with a Kenko 1.4x, my view finder just went black, the camera would still take pictures just everything (the shot and view finder was black.) So I went back inside and cleaned everything off as well as defrosted everything, going from a cool condo on the beach to the hot and humid florida beach air fogs everything up completely.

Once I got everything back inside and wiped off I come to realize that all my lenses with a manual aperture ring (my 300 F4 AF-S and my 50 1.8D) get an fEE message on my D200, which according to the manual means the lens aperture ring is not locked at its lowest setting (which it is). Now on the other hand, all my other AF-S/HSM lenses work fine, as well as the two lenses with the aperture rings (the 300 and 50) work fine on my D50.

Just to clarify:

Nikon 300 F4 AF-S (fEE with D200, works fine with D50)
Nikon 50 1.8D (fEE with D200, works fine with D50)
Nikon 24-85 AF-S (fine on both)
Sigma 10-20 HSM (fine on both)

So I believe its safe to say it's a problem with the D200 lens mount. Is it possible something got fried by all of the condensation?

I have a full warranty on the D200, which is at least a bit comforting.

Anyone else experience this?

I had this problem with a D200.

I removed the lens then put it on again. Worked fine after that. Made me miss a grezt action shot. Grrr.

Joey do I have a tale for you.

I just got my D200 back from Nikon after a month ordeal. My D200 gave me the same problem. Sometimes it would work sometimes it wouldn't giving me that "FEE" error. Luckily while in LAS it worked most of the time so I waited till I got back to NY to get it looked at. Since the Melville Nikon headquarters is a short drive I dropped it off with specific instructions to diagnose the problem because Nikon likes to just replace parts and not figure out the problem so after the first go around they replaced a whole bunch of stuff including the lens mount. When I picked it up lo and behold the problem still existed. I went ape and told the person I was not paying another dime and wanted the problem found and fixed properly. They were very nice but had my camera going on a month! Not to mention Nikon subs out their phone CS and it's crap. Some guy in Canada or something looking at the same webpage I am that kept saying my camera was "in shop". So I drove there and asked that my camera cease being held hostage. In which some woman came out and basically said it sat somewhere and just needed a part replaced and it would be done the next day. The invoice is being sent to me with what they did but I suspect its the circut wiring up top. If you send it to Nikon Joey be very careful and specific or you won't see your camera for ahwile. I will update you on what the invoice says when I get it.

Did anything happen to your camera or did it just stop working out of the blue? When I had walked outside this morning there was pretty much standing drops of water on my camera from all the heat and humidity.

As much as I hate to admit it, I wasn't using the camera when it happened, I was out trying to surf and my friend called me over and said everything was black, and it was, the view finder was solid black as were the shots it took. He says he didn't touch anything but there's no telling.

My friend Maciek is coming by tomorrow and I'm going to give his 80-400 and his 16-85 a shot and see if the problem persists with his gear.

Thanks for the heads up on Nikon too, I bought my D200 from Ritz way back when and have repurchased the extended warranty for it back when I smashed the LCD screen back in January. Ritz had it sent away and back like new in about 3 weeks I believe. Hopefully their performance is kept up.

Just started getting the error message one day. Like you I switched lenses and it went away but got worse as time went by.

Yep it's something inside the camera. I am beginning to think it is a design thing.

It should still give you the trouble only with lenses with aperture rings because it is an issue with the connection on top and inside of the lens mount.

Very true, in talking to the people at Ritz, they first send it to one of their repair centers and if they can't fix it then they send it to Nikon.

Check out the above thread from the DPReview website. It explains it better and possible causes for the FEE error.

It's basically caused by the mechanical ring on the body side of the lens mount that is spring loaded and follows the aperature ring around. The little "tab" that can fold up or down on the lens aperature ring engages this sprint loaded ring on the body and gives the body the aperature info as to min aperature. A mismatch in this reading will result in an FEE error. You can often clear the error by moving body ring with a fingernail. Sometimes a small piece of grit either jams or slows this movement. That's also why it appears transient.

Though this is true it was not the case in my camera.

I this case, I doubt it is an issue with the aperture control ring and associated mechanisms.

While not having the ring set to F/32 will cause the fEE error - I suspect this is something more to do with the humidity/condensation.

Good advice for anyone dealing with any large corporation. My D700 issues were resolved adequately by Nikon eventually (and quickly) so I can no longer complain. I also got a lens checked at the same time for no extra cost (even though it was bought in NY, not locally).

Personally I have my own theory. I think it has to do with the contacts just inside the lens mount that for some reason go bad with the constant changing of lenses. I know they replaced something inside the camera. Can't wait to get the invoice.

Ok just got the invoice from Nikon and it's more confusing than ever. Here is what it says

GENERAL CHECK AND CLEAN
RPL SHUTTER MECHANISM
ADJ AUTOFOCUS OPERATION

Oh well the camera works so I guess it's ok  faint

mmm you got a new shutter out of the deal? and I'm thinking "ADJ Autofocus" is a blanket term that could mean just about anything.

Maybe I'll just take a hammer to my D200 and get a little upgrade...haha

Well keep it as a backup.  biggrin  as for the rest Nikon repair leaves a lot to be desired. Nobody seems to know anything about what is going on. It's really depressing to invest in the best imaging equipment and go through this every time I need repair or service.
