Opinion On File Sizes.

Tue Jul 07, 2009 10:12 am

Do the number of views for your photos drop as you upload and get accepted bigger file sizes, say 1600,1500,1400, It seems that way.

Opinions welcome.

No, not really.

You can get perfectly respectable views at 1024px (as I've done). It's more about subject and making the photo interesting. That seems to dictate the views.

Apart from that, views are influenced by links from search engines, getting on the front page - and obviously, if the photo captures some dramatic accident like the Kalitta 747 accident in Brussels, the BA 777 "heavy landing" at Heathrow or the US Airways Airbus water-ditching.

It was my understanding that you can't even tell what size the photo is until it's opened in large? So views are affected by content only rather than file size.

I think larger files are only ok, when the quality is optimal, both in sharpness and exposure.
It is not necessary to upload large to get many views, look at the high hitting photographers, most of them upload at 1024 pix.

Not quite. That is circumvented by those photographers who put the utterly non-descriptive 1600px in their photo description.

I'm not sure why anyone would put that there unless they were seeking more traffic to their photos. It offers has no descriptive purpose.
