Need Help With Aircraft Types

Mon Jul 13, 2009 9:10 am

Hi Guys,

I had two pictures approved over the weekend, both of which are sunset shots at Boston during March this year, and I have a question regarding the aircraft types that are in the photos.

I've had a few emails and comments made regarding the shots, including this charming and well thought out email from last night:

Quote:
Your really stupid on the 2 sunset pics. u took the first top one is an AirTran 717-200 and the 2nd one is an Air Canada ERJ-190 retard maybe you should stop taking pics all together!!!

My main field of interest is military aviation so I'm not 100% the best on airliners. I use two cameras (1 zoom lens & 1 prime lens) and on the days in question I was using one camera to take shots of the aircraft coming towards me and I was using the other camera to take shots of the aircraft after they had passed over my head.

Using the times from the photo exif data I thought I had matched up the correct registrations to the aircraft in the pictures but I think the clocks on my cameras probably weren't exactly matched. The incorrect registration combined with my less than perfect knowledge of airliners resulted in the incorrect information being used with the pictures.

Anyway, here are the photos that I need help with, once I get a correct type ID I can go through my shots again and get the correct registrations then correct the information in the database.

Firstly, no hard feelings about that e-mail. I wouldn't take him seriously at all with spelling and grammar like that. But he is right. The first one is an E190/195 and the second a 717. You can tell the first one is an E190/195 by the wide and flattened engines (I know that 737's have flattened bases to their engines too but this to more of an extent). Also, the shape of the APU exhaust.

The second one is a 717 because of the shape of the T-tail (extended above the horizontal stabilisers), lack of winglets and engine shape.

Awesome shots too. Correct the info and they'll be even better!

But isn't the ERJ B6? Looks like a LiveTV bubble on top of the plane.

Looking on www.libhomeradar.org the afternoon ACA364/367 was flown by C-FEJY on the 3rd March and it's an E175-200SU. It's the only Canadian registered Embraer arriving at around dusk.

The B717, judging by timings was probably TRS322 flown by N948AT. Midwest have a B717 flight around this time as well (YX0211), but I can't find any records for that day.

What makes us think it's gotta be Canadian? The a/c on the photo you posted is missing the dome on top of the fuselage.

Only going off the "helpful" comments in the opener. I hadn't looked close enough to see the fuselage dome.

Going to be harder to ID the plane if it's JetBlue, other than it being an E190.

Hi Guys,

Thanks to you all for the replies. Now that I have an idea of what the correct aircraft are I can check through the pictures I have taken of the aircraft as they fly towards me instead of flying directly into the sun to id them properly.

I'll also have a look through www.libhomeradar.org, I tried briefly but couldn't get it figured out, I will have a look again later this evening.

Regards,

Frank.

If you do a database search with the menu just above the photo of the LTU A330

Home Docu Examples Functions Downloads Database Search.........etc

the tabbed pages let you search a number of different ways.

You'll need to know the flight numbers. Something like Flightaware will give the incoming aircraft in time order, but the records for individual flights may not go back to the 3rd March. Some flights will change (disappear or appear) for the summer season.

You can search by airport and this will list all flights to/from the airport as logged on ACARS or SBS, but some flight numbers aren't linked to routes so won't be included.

For BOS inbounds you need, at the moment, to be on page 423 (use the URL on the address bar to enter the page number rather than the page list under the table)

http://www.libhomeradar.org/database...y/results.php?qid=1514713&page=423

Note that the listed information could be for the aircraft anywhere on its route (it depends on where the ACARS/SBS monitor is) so it may not necessarily be near Boston at the time shown - and the time is UTC so NOT the local time in BOS. You'll need to add 6hrs (I think) to get the appropriate time corresponding to your local time.

Nice shots. A friend of mine has his sailboat docked right across from that green buoy on Winthrop. You've given me the motivation to try for some of those! Nice!

Hi Guys,

Thanks again for your help.

I did some digging, unfortunately my pictures did not throw up any leads, the aircraft in the pictures must have been the ones I waited for to fly over my head before taking the picture.

This is what I have come up with, the aircraft & flight numbers listed below are closest in time to the SBS logs from when the picture was taken:

3th March, 22.39UTC
Boeing 717, AirTrans

4th March, 22.37UTC,
Embraer 190, JetBlue
N239JB, B61264
or
N258JB, B60402

If I went with Boeing 717, AirTrans, N9**AT and Embraer 190, JetBlue, N2**JB for the database update would people be happy?

That should be more than enough.

People should be happy enough with the nice shots. Just do your best to get the types right, and don't fret over the exact regs.

If you'RE this bad at dEscribing your problems with plane types mAybe you should stop speaking/writing altogether (or at least learn what the little dotted red lines under your misspelled words mean).

Frank, ignore the ridiculous comments & mail, and take it from the serious photographers here: you took some great shots, and their artistic value far outweighs any initial errors in identifying the plane types. Please keep up the great work.

Hi Dana,

I'm not bothered in the least about the emails, I just posted them more for their comic value than anything else. Still, it's amazing how worked up people can get over mistaken aircraft id's, I thought I had the correct info supplied, but hey, I'm not perfect!

Thanks too for the feedback on the photos, it's much appreciated.

Frank.

What amazes me is how somebody will lean out of the window quite this far, when they are quite obviously wrong about the AC ERJ themselves. What a douchebag.
