Noise In The Shadows At 100 ISO

Wed Jul 15, 2009 4:39 am

I'm wondering if the noise I get in the shadows, particularly around the tires is normal? I had pretty good light, ISO 100 1/500th f/9, Aperature Priority. Could it be still not exposed correctly?

I already added a little noise reduction overall when I edited it in Adobe Camera Raw. Prior to adding the Smart Sharpening (75% / .3) the noise was still in the tires, but did get a little worse after sharpening. Just curious if there is something I can improve on or something I'm doing wrong? Is it the entry level camera, etc?

The camera level is probably to blame...I have found around sunset, shadows to take on strange hues...greenish, yellow when in fact the rest of the exposure looks fine.ISO100. When I correct the shadows, it shifts the rest of my color balance...j

I don't think I'm seeing the noise you're talking about. I suppose there might be a little in the leftmost tire visible, but it might also be texture. Same for the pavement. On the right side of the image there's some heat haze, but that's obviously not noise. I also went looking for jpeg artifacts, thinking maybe you're confusing those for noise, but on my monitor, the image looks pretty clean.

But if you're zooming in past 100%, it's likely that even with a good camera at low ISO, you'll see some slight noise mottling of smooth areas. Cameras produce some noise at all ISO's. It's just low enough to be negligible at low ISO's.

I thoroughly recommending purchasing this. Definitely worth the price.

I don't see it either.

You have to remember that most tyres make noise when they are rotating ...

Ok, maybe I'm over thinking it. Got a few rejections recently, so I've been trying to do whatever I can to increase the quality of the photos I take. One of them was shooting at ISO 100 when I can. Thought it was a little noisy in the shadow areas and i was surprised by that.

Thank you!

If you're planning on submitting that shot, the white part of the fuselage looks to me to have a hint of red tinge to it. Someone on another monitor may be able to confirm, but I think you should try reconverting the photo with a different white balance.

Keep in mind when you get rejections that this is a fairly common plane and angle, so the screening standards are likely to be tough.

Good luck.
