Photo Acceptance - Pre-Screening (DL767Captain)

Tue Jul 21, 2009 10:30 pm

So i decided to try out my new Sony 70-300 G Series lens at SAN the other day and came away with some good shots even with the bad lighting and heat haze. I took a couple with a macro lens as well just to mess around and got some interesting results (ill put them at the end). The background is a little blurry, something I like in aviation photography, but may not work. As for the photos i'm including any suggestions on how the style or how to crop and edit would be great, i have no idea if any of these are even worthy to be on this site so just let me know what you think.

As they all need much tighter crops, it's pretty difficult to gauge their quality as they are. Post some closer crops at your upload size (or the full size if you're not sure about the crops) and we can comment better.

It looks now like they might be soft and washed out (not enough contrast), but proper crops will make it much easier to tell.

I dont have too much experience myself but i think that; #2 Continental, #4 Virgin America & #3 Southwest look like they would be good ones to send into photoshop.  Smile

I think part of that was the time of day with some pretty harsh lighting, as for contrast... is that something to fix in editing or something to do with the camera and settings?

Ok so I did some basic crops and boosted contrast a little, let me know what you think

First, a small piece of advice... pick one or two of your favorites, and just post them. Most people won't take the time to comment on every one of a flood of similar pics, especially when there are multiples of the same aircraft at almost exactly the same angle.

As such, I won't comment on each pic, but rather give overall thoughts.

1. The cropping is better, but still not quite there. Some are unbalanced (more space on one side than the other), some still have too much dead space, and some are too low in the frame.

2. They all have a color cast, in this case blue. They need to be warmer, so more yellow is needed, or a higher temperature if you're adjusting in RAW.

3. The contrast is off a little, but not too much. Most need just a little boost.

4. Almost all of them are pretty soft. There are a couple that look like they may have had sharpening applied, but it hasn't helped. This would be a major problem that would need to be addressed in the re-edits.

So next, aim for quality over quantity, and pick just a couple you think are best and concentrate on them.

Still could use a tighter crop.

I'm assuming you'd like some comments about your shot...

You still need to crop a little tighter. There's no reason to leave that much empty space to the right and left of the aircraft. See below for something you should aim for when cropping.

Also in the example below, I've added a little contrast to the left side, but just a little.

http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/3640/dsc024231y.jpg

However, the biggest problem is not the crop or contrast, it's the lack of overall quality. The picture suffers from oversharpening as well as softness/bluriness, and I'm starting to see grain. This could be because of your save settings, or because you had to crop a lot from the original image, or it could be something else. Whatever the cause, the quality's too low to warrant an attempt at uploading.

If you want help in determining the cause of the low quality, let me know.

Ya any help would be great, i'm still trying to get used to airliners.net standards, it seems that airliners.net seems to like more contrast than i prefer so any help would be appreciated.

I think it's partly the way it's being exported because when i look at the picture in aperture it looks much better than the exported version and a much higher quality

If you want to show/send me the original version (raw preferably, but full-size jpeg is ok) that will give me a better idea where you're going wrong. I seem to be making this offer a lot recently, but it's really the only way to tell where the problem lies: low-quality original, or quality is being lost in the editing/saving process.
