Tue Aug 04, 2009 5:28 pm

Hey guys I know there's quite a few that I want you to look at but if you could just let me know which ones have potential so I can take more time to edit them, thanks!

Unfortunately all are dark and have major quality issues I'm afriad. Get that sun low and behind you so you can get that fuselage lit up better.
Hey that guy with the private jet can bail us out! Why? HE CAN AFFORD IT!

All are soft and need to be leveled. It looks like they were shot under filtered sunshine. Tricky conditions...

Ya it was strangely cloudy and the clouds happened to put shade on the plane while the rest was pretty sunny

You gotta get out to SAN at the right time! Like yesterday...was PERFECT around 6:30pm. Very clear visibility, bright shiny sun setting low and some nice white clouds up there to add to the backdrop. I haven't even bothered shooting at SAN lately, but I pulled the camera out for a bit yesterday. It's the worst time of year. But come September and October when we get those off-shore flows it should be great! Nice orange Southern California evenings!

How about this edit, am I on the right track or is this one just a failure?

Definitely on the right track. You've almost got it right with that edit, just need to balance the sharpening a little better... you've got jaggies in a few places (leading edge of wing, etc...) and a little too soft in others (tail). It's always a delicate balance that has to be achieved (sharpening - too much vs. too little), but other than that you've definitely going in the right direction.

Yup. Sharpening looks better.

Just a question, how are you saving the file when processing? It looks like you've lost some quality in the process... You can see jpeg artifacting, especially if you equalize the picture (the differing contrast in the sky shouldn't be so blocky/pixelated). Another hint something is wrong with your save process is that the file is only about 150k in size... should be double that.

It's a RAW format which is brought into aperture, then when I am done editing and send it to photobucket to put on here I was exporting it as a Jpeg with an image quality of 10 and DPI of 72. I just looked at the settings and it can be changed to a Image quality of 12 and DPI of 300 which will look like this

Maybe photobucket isn't the best site to use, when I look at the upload options it's reducing the size to a 17" screen (1024 x 768) I don't know if that is part of the issue

That was almost certainly the problem.

Looks much better now. Just up the contrast a little, and you should be good to go.

Looks better, but like I mentioned above, you've got to change your save settings. The quality is too low (compression artifacts) because you're not saving at maximum quality. Just look at the file size.... only 120k.... should be 500k+.

See what I said above:

Same problem is still there.

Another thing I'd also do is crop a little less tightly - looks like you're almost ready to chop the horizontal stabilisers off. Apparently some screeners let this go but others will pick up on it. I know folks who've had rejections for cropping too tightly so better be safe than sorry.

then it must be a problem through uploading through photobucket because on my desktop the export is 1.6mb, so something about photobucket is making it much smaller

Certainly could be, but as it is, it's kind of hard to fairly judge quality at such low resolution.
