Need Help With Picture Request

Fri Aug 07, 2009 5:44 pm

I just received an email from somebody at Alaska Airlines (Director of Projects, Corporate Real Estate), requesting a 24x36 enlargement of my Horizon's Dash-8 in Washington Huskies special colors. They want me to deliver in 2-3 days and respond ASAP about availability and pricing.

Since I have no previous experience with the selling of my pictures, I am looking for guidance from you guys.

Here is the shot they request:

Here is the quick reply I sent back:

"I am very honored you are interested in this shot. Before I can answer the question regarding pricing and availability, I would like to know if you interested in the digital image (single use or full copyright) or a printed copy (24x36)."

Does anyone have any ideas on pricing and tips for printing (if they don't want the file and do it themselves)?

Personally I like Mpix.com. I have a bunch of 8X12 prints for a portfolio and I also have some 20X30's hanging on my walls from different vacations. They have a good turn around time and decent pricing. For a 24X36 print it is $45 and I would add the Lustre Coating for another $6. I have always had good experiences with them. For pricing it is up to you, but I would make sure to get paid something.

Thanks Matt,

I was thinking I could ask for Alaska round trip ticket(s). I have a lab around the corner. For the 24x36 they charge $50 (including some final color correction) plus shipping. So I was thinking I would like to get at least $150 to $200. Too greedy?

No, I think that is the proper amount. If you can get a ticket it might be easier on them then actual money so that is a great idea. Best of luck. Let us know what happens.

Matt, thanks for your help.

I asked them for a round trip ticket, but they claimed it would be too complicated. So I offered them the print for $300 (including printing cost and shipping) and they immediately took it. Maybe I could have gone higher, but at this point I am just happy I got a proper sale out of it.

Very cool. I actually remember that shot in the pre/post screening threads. Nice to see you made some money out of it. Makes the hobby that much more rewarding.
