Looking To Hire A Photographer In The LHR Area

Mon Aug 17, 2009 5:27 pm

Dear all,

My old man who is a BAW 747-400 captain is on the verge of reitrement. I thought it would be real nice to get a shot of hs flight. The big problem is that I no longer live in the UK and wont be there the day he does his last arrival into LHR. I was wondering if I could hire someone to do it for me? Its an early flight and arrives the 29th August 0530 in the morning from HKG. I guess one may also need an air radio so the correct A/C is sighted

if there is anyone out there who is interested, please let me know,

Kindest Regards,

Ashley Jones

Hi there!

Great idea by the way! You may need more than one photog - that time of the morning both runways can be used at the same time (in either direction) making it a potential rush job or worse - no shot at all. Better take a scanner and some running shoes.

Yeah, things were easier back in the days of BA being T4, atleast at that time of the morning most landings were on 27L/09R, now you mention that and T5 being the main terminal, its anyones guess where it might end up. Just have to hope it will be on the chosen RWY, however, i guess it still might be possible with zoom if one stand between RWYs in one direction if thats possible, eg between 27L and 27R. Scanner good idea  Smile. Thanks for the suggestion

This could be tricky with light, I'm not sure. Sunrise on that day is around 06:10 and the ETA is 05:30. Some more experienced guys may know if its workable or not, weather depending of course.

If you could get an airside photographer on the case at least the illumination may be better. Just thoughts really.....

That light will indeed be tricky - someone who really knows what they're doing might be able to pull off something workable, but on long-haul flights like these they're often quite early, which would make things even tougher.

Perhaps you could work it the other way around and see if there's a HKG photographer who could catch his last flight's departure. Not sure if the departure time light works any better, but if it's a day departure you might be in OK shape.

In any event, congratulations to your father.

I would try to get in touch with your father's superior. I can't really imagine that there won't be any festivities after his last flight and there might be the chance to organize some kind of official shooting in coherence with the celebration.

Is that time quoted GMT or BST? If it is GMT, then I'm sorry to say it will be dark. Big problem is sunrise is now getting later and later each day. I think sun up was around 5.50am today (BST) in London and this will reduce to 6.00am by this weekend. So, to be fair, the sunlight won't be good until 6.30.

No point doing the outbound flights for HKG as these depart LHR after dark during the late evening. One possibility is the arrival in HKG as it will be light. This is your best bet. Hope this helps.

Dear all,

Thank you very much for your input and thought, its very much appreciated! I thought light would indeed be a problem and getting a good shot will be very hard. I have found HeathrowCam on the net and it kicks in at around 530am BST at the moment, I think in 10 days or so it will be starting up at around 545 BST or so. The images there are very good, but im not sure how good they are for a framed photo. Its worth a go if the camera is up and running and manages to get a shot.

BA have asked alot of senior pilots to retire by the end of August and I think there are some 80 retiring in the final few days of August so I dont think BA have any big plans for the big "fire bregade send off" (Also the UK basically has a hose pipe ban every summer anyway so i doubt there will be any exceptions to waste valuable water!).

Thanks once again for your help!

I can only suggest you let us know if your old fella is operating any flights before his final one and may be we will be able to do something this weekend? Slim chance but worth a punt.

I assume this wil be BAW26 from VHHH? The light would be OK today - not due in until 14:47! There is always hope!

TrackCharlie:

No I think the flight is BA32 which lands at 0535 BST, so it is pretty dark then.

The guys on HeathrowCAM have been real helpful though and I got a great image of his arrival from Capetown last weekend http://heathrowcam.net/images/106050.jpg. They are going to try and setup the camera a little earlier next week for his final trip so there is always a chance!

Have you heard about the amount of rain we've had this summer?!?! They should be encouraging us to use hosepipes to stop our reservoirs from bursting their banks!

TC,

Sorry, but i just saw your post now!. Thank you very much for trying to help me out. I have been really busy this week and I have not been back on this site since the last time I wrote to you. Anyway, I did not get a final shot of him, but he did land at 0515 BST this morning, so it would have been really hard to get a shot. I have to make do with his 3rd from last flight from JNB a few weeks back, its a nice one. Thanks once again for offering to help out!
