Tell Us About Your Spotting-goals For The Future

Mon Aug 31, 2009 9:57 am

Hej,

yesterday I a good friend of mine asked me about my planespotting goals for the future. Honestly, I never thought about that before and I think it might be interesting to read what goals other people have for the future.
Is there a special plane you would love to ban on your sensor? A special image composition? Photos of all planes of a certain airline? ...

I'm still thinking about my goals and will post them here later as soon as I'm sure about it.
Nobody is perfect - not even a perfect fool.

Planespotting goals for the future:

1. Get (at least) 50 on A.Net so that my name can register on the "Airliners.Net Photographers" page
2. First Class cabin shot (one where I'm actually a passenger in F  Wink)
3. Head to many more airports and get shots from plenty of places
4. Special events like inaugural flights etc.
5. Cockpit shot

Probably got more that I've thought about..
It's all about the destination AND the journey.

I'm just going to try to get to no. 50 - then I might disappear for 1/2 a year or so (I sometimes do that).

Other than that, I don't have any particular plans. I'd been thinking of taking a trip overseas, but never really decided where - or when.

I do however have one immediate wish - I want to photograph the RAAF F-111C properly before it is retired from service. So far I've always managed to not have any luck photographing one - I see them a lot of times, but never when I have a camera.  Sad

My guess is that it probably won't happen.

Yeah, I wish I had my DSLR when the F-111 came to town. Regardless, seeing the Drop and Burn was such an awesome experience and I probably wouldn't have got a decent shot either.. I don't think they'll be around for another 1.5 years and the RAAF might just send the F/A 18s back again.

One more I'd like to add to the list - an amazing air-to-air shot

For me:

Get DSLR Camera
Go to more places/airports
Spend more time spotting
Take better pictures that are more likely to get accepted
And of course, to take pictures of a midair sunset, because every time I plan to, something happens that makes me lose the opportunity.

I don't know that it's a goal per se as it's not likely to happen, but I'd love to get out for a first flight for an airplane model, for instance the 787 or A350.

However, since I live near New York a much more attainable goal for me will be to get my first shots of those aircraft, as they're sure to be scheduled into JFK quickly after they enter service.

One of mine is to eventually pull myself away from the gazillions of side-ons I love and get out to the runway ends at my local (MAN) very early morning/late evening for those dramatic sunset shots! I'd like to try those sunsets you see a lot from LHR too, with a long line of inbound aircraft in the frame.

Other than that, my goals are to get a nice sunny side-on of an A380 in each livery, have a snap at the An-225 again in better light (especially with that new scheme!) and visit Russia one last time before all the Soviet types are retired.

I also wouldn't mind seeing/photographing the An-22 again but that's not quite as important.

I got a few:
1. See the A380 (is sadly not at AMS)
2. Visit LHR (Next year)
3. Visit LAX and SFO (next year too)
4. Photograph the An-225
5. Spot new planes such 787 and A350!
6. Visit more than only AMS, but unfortunately I do not own a drivers license  Sad

I want much more, but you can't have everything in life eh?

I second that.

Right now I'd like to test out a few lenses while I'm sitting here at DFW and hopefully make a purchase sometime this fall.

Overall I just want to take full advantage of the job I have and hopefully (once I learn more about shooting) get some great shots all over the world. If they are A.net quality, even better!

I recently broke 50, so one of my future goals is to make the top photo, as well as do some air to air photography. Maybe to photograph some rare birds in flight too.

1. Quality Static night shots. Most of mine have been rejected for Soft or Noise. Example:

2. Sunset photo of the sun and an aircraft. I got two borderline rejections recently, I'm almost there. Example

3. End of the runway getting a straight on departure. Example

4. Cape Air taxiing in front of a 747. I'm almost there on that too, but rejected.
5. Lineup of awaiting aircraft from new Taxiway Mike instead of old taxiway November at BOS Almost! Example

6. Foggy arrival shot with the runway approach light lighting up the aircraft from underneath.
7. Snowstorm shots. I have a bunch, but none accepted. Interestingly enough I took this exact same shot at the exact same time, mine came out horrible and this one is a winner:

8. A bunch more but I gotta run...  Smile

RE: Tell Us About Your Spotting-goals For The Future

Mon Aug 31, 2009 7:14 pm

Since the last thread about goals, I can happy say I achieved some of the goals on my list.

Some of my future Airliners.net goals include...

-Finally reach 200 photos in the DB. Just two more to go. I have been sllllllooooooooooowwwly approaching 200...I haven't been very active at times. I usually upload in spurts...

-Reach 1 million views. Just under 300,000 to go!  bigthumbsup

-Have one of my shots chosen and displayed in one of the "Shots that make you go wow" threads.  Big grin

As far as general spotting goals...

-Continue to venture away from SAN and visit different airports. This was a previous goal of mine and I have been able to get a few cities off my list.

-Continue to meet more photographers.

-Improve my skills. I'm always learning. I especially like attempting more challenging shots instead of side-on + perfectly clear blue sky. Unfortunately when thinking a.net, it's one thing to pull off a difficult shot in an otherwise acceptable manner, but to get it by the screeners adds a whole new challenge.

-I'd like to make another sale/get published again. I succeeded once in '08 and once so far this year. Hopefully it continues.

-I pretty much put together my ideal kit as far as equipment goes. I wouldn't mind adding faster glass, or a prime to the mix sometime in the future. But it will be a while.

And lastly...

-Continue to have fun!

Get as much Russian Airplanes as I can (bis)
Upgrade to a decent dSLR with decent lens (that'll depend on $$$ but should be possible I think)

My goals are a bit on the sad side:

Continue scanning all slides I made when I was a spotter, that'll easily keep me sweet for another 2 years, or more.

Then sell my entire collection.

On the active side:
- Go down to BRU to eat my sandwiches at noon a few more times before I change my job.
- Visit Airbus in TLS  Smile

I'm quite sure I'll never go back to being an active spotter. I'll love aviation forever and will always look up when I see a plane but the times I had in the '90's are never coming back.

-Get a shot accepted (inching closer and closer)
- Improve shooting technique.
-Improve editing technique
-Try out new spots around BOS. Constitution beach is on the list, along with the Terminal B parking garage.
-Meet other spotters.
-Catch the rare Delta MD-90 that shows up around BOS during winter/early spring. (yes I have seen them come to BOS on Flightaware and Passur)
-I'm reasonably satisfied with my gear, though a 70-300 VR is always nice.

I'd like to get my home-made rabbit-powered time machine working at last so I can travel back to the 1970s and earlier and photograph some classic airliners. If I can't get the time machine to work, I hope to discover the hiding place of a previously unknown collection of pristine aviation slides taken by a very distant and long deceased ancestor. Either scenario should lead to a significant boost to my acceptance ratio. I'm not sure anything else will work.

- Shoot in both SXM and AMS.
- Shoot the A380 at EZE (the only time it came here I wasn't able to go to the airport... and I was even invited to the promotional flight!)
- Shoot inside an AR B744.
- Shoot some air to air.
- Shoot from a USAF tanker.
- Go to Oshkosh.

Fly to Sydney on Qantas (QF32) or Singapore Airlines and you'll likely get the A380. You'll get your cabin shots too.

I would love to visit the Swiss Air Force demo at Axalp again and would love to spend some time in the LFA at Wales, but with limited holidays and a family with other priorities, this will be very hard to achieve in the near future...
I still have a lot of old slides to scan, so that will also keep me happy (and busy) for a very long time!

Best regards,

Walter

Well right now my first goal is to get a 100-400mm lens, hopefully a couple months down the road I'll have the money to afford it!

From there, no realy goals per se, I'd like to get to get more warbird shots, so visit places such as Oshkosh.

Basically I'd like to continue getting pictures of aircraft in locations and conditions that are not often seen on this site. I'm hoping to fly the twin otter on floats/wheels/skis next summer, so that should offer some excellent photo opportunities. Along with that I'd like to try a lot of panoramic shots, when the scenery allows for it of course!

#1 - upload a photograph
#2 - get a photograph accepted
#3 - upgrade to a high quality zoom lens
#4 - add to my list of airlines/airplanes viewed through my telescope. Unique additions are now rare.
#5 - figure out how to take a better photo through said telescope. Just got into it.

1) 50 on here. (26 away)

2) TOTD (had one make it to second place a few weeks ago)

3) Improve my skills both from taking the actual picture, and editing it.

4) To get many shots in from my local airport (OKC)

5) Have fun while doing all of the above and maybe meeting some fellow photogs in the process.
Lighten up while you still can, don't even try to understand, just find a place to make your stand and take it easy
