Wed Oct 07, 2009 8:26 pm

Honestly, two years ago this picture would have had at least 100.000 views! What is going wrong...such a great and unique shot and "only" about 30.000 after one day? The breakdown in views only becomes noticeable to the "TOP OF 24 HOUR" shots, afterwards views are more or less the same. What I guess is that we have lost a lot of the so called "random users" while the "frequent users" are still there to view and upload?!?

I doubt that very much, even back in the day when a shot was up on the frontpage for 24 hours (instead of just a fraction now) shots would rarely get over 30K fews in a day. 30K after a day is not too bad I would say.

Anyway, I have found the majority of hits come after 24hrs, a.net seems to get a lot of traffic from search engines these days. I think last year I had one shot with 100K+ hits, and now I have like 15, all from shots that were already on the db.

Personally I find my average hits going up quick as ever, even if some shots dont do as well as I had hoped Smile

Please do not missunderstand me, 30.000 is perfect and great but in my opinion it would have been much more one or two years ago.

That´s what I wanted to say but couldn´t find the correct words maybe. The first day views are often very low but afterwards will go up quicker than before. That was just an observation regarding TOP 24 HOURS.

Two years ago, this photo would have been on the front page for a LOT longer, leading to more views.

Big version: Width: 730 Height: 487 File size: 81kb
long ago

If you remember correctly, a photo would enter the front page as the second runner up, then level up to first runner up and finally to the top position. Once its reign was over, the photo would remain on the front page while it waited for the next two first place finishers to slowly knock it off. If it was worthy of "Photographer's Choice", it would remain on the front page for many more hours as it climbed and descended that ladder. Therefore, it could remain on the front page for many hours.

The way it works now, top photos like this will only remain on the front page for 4-6 hours (rarely longer). Like Tim said, 30k is damn fine for the amount of time this photo has been on the front page.

Don't worry, this photo highlights a growing and now more perceptible problem in aviation, bird strikes. This photo will continue to gather views for a long long time to come.

Which unfortunately also means greater chance of unauthorized use. Being such a unique photo though will at least cause it to stand out making it harder to argue that it was used illegally (if it ever is).

Not to be the downer, but we all know its got a chance.

I see it has the watermark, so that should deter many from using it illegally.

Hi,

I expected it to get some more hits but can't say that I'm disappointed about 30k views.

We shouldn't forget that the photo was published in a lot of magazines and newspapers and also on their websites more than one week ago.
I have seen many posts in different forums with links to the picture on the Bild and Daily Mail websites so probably the majority has seen it somewhere else already.

Isn't there a rumour running that some time back views were counted twice? Meaning that 30k today would have been 60k back then?

Well at least you have so many hits on the photo, I have taken over 3000 at different airports and those that I have thought maybe at least respectable have been rejected constantly, that is soul destroying so to have 30k hits in one day? - be happy be very happy as I haven't even had one.

On an unrelated note, I noticed you stated that over 200 birds were sucked into the engines. Did you give that number to the newspaper or did you clip that from the news story? I am just wondering about the amount of birds that actually got sucked into the engines and the total number of birds in the "swarm".
