Spotting A380 At LAX

Fri Oct 09, 2009 3:15 am

The last time I tried catching the QF11 A380 at LAX I was waiting at 25L but it landed on 24R. Could anyone familiar with A380 and LAX tell me which runway the plane most likely would land on? I thought the 25L was extended/enhanced just for the A380... Thanks!

I think it tends to use 25L the most but the other side of the airfield is equipped to handle it as well in fact I think both those end gates on each side can be used by it. Get a radio and listen to approach and you will have a heads up.

its a crapshoot. every time I have been on the Hill it has come in on 24R. Usually easier for them I guess because of gate assignment.
Oh, it's a big pretty white plane with red stripes, curtains in the windows and wheels and it looks like a big Tylenol.

Pretty simple solution to a simple problem: go spotting on the days during which 2 QF A380 come in! The 2nd A380 will land on the opposite runway the 1st one does, guaranteed.

If you can't manage that, you'd be wise to take a look at the A380-compatible gate at North and South TBIT and see which side's gate looks like it's being prepped to handle an incoming giant.

The A380 will ALWAYS land on the side of the airport where its assigned bay is located. It's far too complicated and hectic for the guys in the tower to have one of these aircraft land and then cross the entire airport...

I wish that were the case! I was on the Hill last year on a super clear day perfect for spotting and had both QF land on the north about an hour apart, just enough time to offload the late arrival first and tow it to remote right before the on time second one came in.

this is probably your best luck or keep an eye out for it in the downwind.

What's the distance in time between the two shooting locations?
Slower traffic, keep right

Imperial Hill to In n Out is an easy 5 - 10 minute drive. One might cut it close though if they saw it on downwind for the 24's while standing at the hill. Parking at the In n Out can take a few minutes alone...it can get quite crowded with traffic in that area.

You would have to find a spot in between and listen to approach to be safe IMO.

sounds like that's what i'll have to do.

i did notice the A380 docked on the north side of the field during my last few spotting trip. Just hoping the bird doesn't slip by me again.
