Rain Cover/hood For 400/500mm Lens And Camera?

Mon Oct 12, 2009 6:46 am

The other day I was out for the first time in weeks doing some photography.

It was raining, and I was struggling with trying to keep the camera and lens dry.

Although it all worked fine (and the camera/lens is properly sealed against weather), I ended up covering it with a heavy towel clipped around it. This sort of worked - but it was really cumbersome, and it wouldn't be any good in much heavier rain.

Got me wondering, are there any suitable rain-covers/hoods available for 400mm/500mm size lenses and camera?

I've got a Zoom-Nikkor 200-400mm lens which I use on a Nikon D3 size camera (D700+MB-D10) with a teleconverter, all mounted on a monopod.

I'm interesting in one that still gives me the ability to fairly easily zoom the lens. I haven't seen any in the local "pro" stores.

I'm not worried by cost - after all, it's cheap compared with the equipment I'm using.

Look at the Kata elements rain cover with an extension pack.

I just had a look at Think Tank:

http://www.thinktankphoto.com/produc...ydrophobia-300-600-rain-cover.aspx

Any good? It appears to be well constructed - but they don't ship to Australia, nor do they have local retailers (closest is in Auckland, New Zealand so it seems).

I'll take a look at Kata if I can find them.

Thanks for the advice.  Smile

Search the threads on www.sportsshooter.com message board. Lots of discussion about this kind of thing there.

I wouldn't bother with that equipment unless you are either under the rain for a long period of time or under a VERY heavy rain. That camera and lens where designed to withstand very heavy rain.

Now, back to the raincover: I'd suggest you to go with the Think Tank Hydrophobia, but I don't know how well it does with zoom lenses. It is U$D 185 with the eyepiece (USA price).

Don't know either how it works with zoom lenses but with a 600mm prime works like a breeze. Heavy downpoor, not a problem. I have had it for about year now and it served me well....

Fortunately, my zoom lens doesn't zoom-externally, it is fixed external length (internal zoom and focusing).

I've been contacted by Think Tank Photo, they've given me a list of people who should be able to get one for me in 3-5 weeks.  Smile

Thanks all.  Smile

Chris.
