Zoom Lens For D700

Tue Oct 13, 2009 3:21 pm

Hi guys,

for the time being I have a Nikon D700 with a Nikkor 18-200mm DX lens as my prime travel equipment. I use this combination as it allows for the best flexibility when I'm on the road.

However, as you may know the DX lenses only allow me to shoot 5MP photos on a camera that would normally allow 12MP. So right now I'm on the lookout for a successor to this lens.
Ideally it would again be a lens with the same zoom range but I want one that offers good quality, sharpness and low light capability.

I know a zoom lens will always be a trade-off of some kind, so I'm looking for experiences from you guys with that kind of lenses on the D700, before I decide on a certain lens.

80-200 2.8. Been my primary since the beginning and it never lets me down.
Hey that guy with the private jet can bail us out! Why? HE CAN AFFORD IT!

Hey Nicholas,

sadly with 80mm to start with I won't be able to take good cockpit shots. I'd rather cut on the farther end then.

While keeping the 18-200 size? Such a lens does not exist. But the 18-200 has none of those qualities, either.

You might have to face the inevitable... it will be much better to just carry two lenses, rather than one do-it-all. If you're already carrying something the size/weight of the D700 around, an additional lens won't be that much more. Plus, you'll get so much more quality out of two more specified lenses...but I'm sure you've been told that before...

If carrying a single super-zoom lens for a full-frame camera is really your only option (seems like a kind of waste of the quality of the D700 Big grin) you might have to go back a few years. Nikon produced in relatively small numbers a 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6 for full frame, but it's no longer in production. It should be relatively cheap if you can find one. I know Sigma also used to make a 28-300mm for full frame (Tamron probably did also), but even on APS-C the quality was lacking, I can't imagine how much the D700 would expose the weakness in that lens. Your best bet would be to try to find a copy of that Nikon 28-200mm. Good luck!

Go here: http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d700/lenses.htm

If you have the room in your kit and the cash to drop for it, pick up the 70-200 f/2.8. Fantastic lens.

Nikkor 24-120mm VR? Or, if you are loaded, the Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8.
Gripped 7D + Sigma 10-20mm + 17-40L + 50mm f/1.8 II + 70-200mm f/4L IS + EF 400mm f/5.6L + 580EX II

I think he's looking for something that covers both wide and telephoto. As Royal mentioned, a good quality lens such as that does not exist, and the ones (I've mentioned above) that do make the obvious compromises you would expect from a super-zoom.

I'm aware of that Royal but given the zoom range, what would be the best compromise? See when I travel around and with all the annoying security controls I have to go through, sometimes on a daily basis, I'm not ready to carry around more than absolutely necessary.

Yeah, I know it's a waste but as said it's only for my (professional) round-trips, so I don't really need a high-end lens, just something that will do the job.
I'll have a look at that 28-300mm lens.  Smile

As already said, starting off at 70mm won't give me the capability of taking cockpit shots...

You got any experience with that lens? How does it perform?

Well you don't need a powerful zoom for that you need a different lens. I carry 3 lenses.

Thierry, I use the 24-120VR often on a D200 and it never disappointed me -- if I keep my expectations reasonable. Stopped down to f/6.7 or 8 it's a very good lens, not the top optical quality of an f/2.8 zoom but perfectly good for A.net and frankly anywhere else.

I do not know how it would be on a far more demanding full-frame sensor, but that's the lens I would get if I had a D700 and needed to compromise. If you shoot cockpits you need at least 24, I'd consider 28mm not wide enough. So that rules out the 28-200, or the 28-300. Frankly if you shoot a 28-300 on a D700 you're just pissing off the Gods!  Smile

Yeah, the Nikon (or Sigma) 28-200 3.5-5.6 is looking like your best (and maybe the only) bet.

There is also the 24-120 as Nicolas mentioned, if you want to gain a little at the wide end, but trade away some of the longer end.

Both got average review scores.

Thierry

Although I use Canon, I have used it twice, but only once in FX. Strangely enough, they were both on the same day but different moments. After having lunch I walked into a Nikon Center which was right across the street from the restaurant, where I tested it with the Nikon D300s. I also tried that camera with the 16-85mm VR. They both seemed quite good, but I liked the 16-85mm focal length more, as I was on a DX camera.

Later that day I attended a wedding where the photographer was using to D700 bodys, one with the 24-120mm VR and another one with a wide, fast prime (dunno which!). We chatted a bit about photography and after some talk I tried one of her D700s, the one with the 24-120mm VR. I really liked it, much more than I did on the D300s and even more than I liked the 16-85mm VR on the D300s.

Hope it helps!

Without trying to hurt anyones feelings, the 24-120 is a dog. A decent quality lens in this focal area does not exist in the current Nikon line-up.

I guess you are trying to travel light, Thierry? This is why I bought a D5000 - to keep in the trunk of my car. My set-up for my D700 is:

20mm f/2.8
24mm f/2.8
28mm f/2.8
50mm f/1.8
85mm f/1.8
15-30
70-200

My set-up for my D5000 is just a 18-55 and 55-200 kit lens. And I still bring my D200 out and about, it currently has a 17-55 f/2.8 hanging off it.

What you are looking for doesn't really exist.

I don't really have anything else to add, except that you might need to get two smaller lenses, such as the 24-70mm F/2.8, and the 70-200mm F/2.8 VR II.

Agree completely with Clickhappy. Canon had a 28-300mm (very heavy too), but Nikon has nothing like this.

I've read several reviews on it, but it's apparently pretty poor when it comes to quality an sharpness. One reviewer even called it the "worst lens ever made by Nikon".

You might be right; at least I couldn't find a lens that would improve my current situation.

Anyway, many thanks for all your inputs, guys!

Thierry - maybe the 24-85 "G Grind" will work for you? I wish I had never sold mine, and they are fairly inexpensive (but no VR)
