Pre-Screening - Question About Crop (Silver1SWA)

Sun Oct 25, 2009 7:09 pm

Hi,

Previously, I have always tried to include the entire aircraft in every photo. I have no experience with motivated crops that exclude portions of aircraft, so I'm not sure how to tell if "it works" or not.

I see similar crops/motives in the DB, but usually of much larger aircraft. I don't know if the size and shape of the 737 doesn't fit well. Does it look unbalanced or awkward? Or does it work? This is pretty much full-frame with the exception of some trimmed off after levelling so I can only crop tighter. Thoughts?

Thank you,
Ryan

I like it, but I'm interested in seeing the right wing cropped off too, so the crop is closer to the nose. It might be more balanced that way, not sure. I would be interested in comparing. Real sharp shot. Love the background and overall lighting. I don't think this SHOULD be a problem, but you never know...

Great looking shot. I do know what you mean about the crop, it does feel a little unbalanced to me as well. It also seems a little low in the frame for my taste. Personally I would like to see what it looks like tightly cropped to the nose. The light is great and the effect of the captain holding on would be accentuated if you were to crop further. I think you can either way on this angle. Whether you leave the left wingtip in or crop closer to the nose, I don't think you'd get a motive rejection for a poor crop.

It is a bit low as Matt noted.

Thanks for the replies. I did two more edits, the first one includes the wing and I raised the sunject in the frame as much as I could. There isn't much room to play with and this is as low as I can go with the crop.

The second one is a crop closer to the nose. Personally I prefer to include the wing, but maybe this just looks more balanced?

Thanks again for your help.

Quoting Silver1SWA (Reply 4):

It seems that the crop with the winglet has less grain/no grain on the underbody.

IMO definitely the closer cropped one but still seems a litlle low in the frame.

Stunning pic!

Again, thanks to everyone for the comments. I'm still not sure which one I want to upload. I like the first one but maybe the tighter crop is safer.

I like the 2nd one better. Both could do well with some careful noise reduction.
