New Camera - Canon 7d Video!

Mon Oct 26, 2009 6:07 pm

Got the new Canon 7d a couple weeks ago, got to say I'm really impressed with it, and I'd highly recommend it if anyone is thinking about geting one... 18 megapixels 8 frames a second, and full 1080p video for really reasonable price.

I'm working towards getting my private pilots license, so I set up the 7d on top of the instrument panel on a solo practice flight last Saturday. I glued together a few mousepads and cut a hole through them for a tripod screw, then fixed the camera to that. The mouse pads kept the camera from sliding around. I used a full packet of trident tropical flavor gum between the mouse pads and lens for extra support. You could probably substitute the tropical flavor with winter fresh and achieve the same effect.

Audio was kinda tricky... I used a cell phone adapter and plugged it into the mic input on the camera... it took me a while to figure it out, at first I had my hedset plugged into the cell adapter, but all you could hear was me breathing like darth vader and no ATC, the trick was taking the battery out of the adapter and making sure it's in the off position (go figure right?) and plug it into to co-pilot headset jack. For better or worse though it kills all background noise.

Pretty cool shot as I'm turning to final getting passed by a VX A319 for the parallel!

would be sort of interesting if you took a photo of the setup but not sure if thats is possible (7d might be only camera) but if you can would be worth sharing.

again, very nice video.

Thanks very much for sharing that video David. I agree - excellent quality.

I am very familiar with ATC communications in the UK (and therefore the way things are said/abbreviated etc) but every time I hear ATC in the US I can all too easily feel like a foreigner - it sometimes sounds almost like another language! It is a real eye-opener regarding the importance of clear communications in the air - even when it is easy to assume that because English speakers are involved there can be no misunderstandings.

Thanks all!

Sluger... I thought I'd seen SNA at its most hectic. I had my stage two checkride today, and of course the wind turned around and they were using runways 1L and R. It was way above and beyond any level of hectic I've ever delt with there previously. I'd never flown out of there with those wind conditions and I couldn't really understand why the flight school doesn't allow student to solo when the conditions are as such... its totally obvious to me now. A real eye opener.

Psych... I know what you mean, I feel the same way when I listen to ATC in the UK! I'm curious, was there anything specific that stuck out as different or unusual to you?

Thanks again for all the positive feedback! Oh yeah, I passed my checkride  Smile First solo cross country this Sunday! I'll probably end up shooting another video of that, and I'll take a shot of the set up too.
