Best Way To Contact Magazines?

Wed Oct 28, 2009 4:12 pm

The AN225 came into my local airport (EMA) at the weekend and I took loads of pictures of it. I think I might try my luck with a couple of UK based aviation mags as it's not a common visitor to EMA and they might like the pics for their news sections.

Anyway what is the best way to contact a magazine. I obviously have the contact details from their website but is it best to email them and ask if they would like my pics to see if they are good enough or should I just send them some via email?

Andy,

I wouldn't bother to be honest. If they wanted to run a story on it, they'll probably contact you rather than expect photographers to contact them. I know you have to speculate to accumulate, but in my experience unless it's a one off story / photograph like Whisperjets bird strike photos a few weeks ago, emails often get ignored. To offer them use of your photos and then ask for payment would just turn them off. I've offered use of photos to local newspapers for newsworthy stories, for example the death of a couple of local pilots when their PA28 suffered engine failure and they ditched in to the Irish Sea, but that was under different circumstances. By all means contact them to say 'look at my portfolio' and that you're happy to be a contributing photographer, but when it comes to use of photos, they'll normally come to you if you have something they want.

Sounds just like that over here in the states. I witnessed a crash this summer and contacted a few local TV news channels as well as newspapers if they wanted to use my images free of charge. A couple of the TV channels did, but the newspapers said they couldn't due to their contract with their own photographers.

The front page image the next day was a rather crappy shot, taken hours after the accident. So much for professional photographers....

Why not contact the mag(s)? The worst they can say is no thanks.

Find an editor's email address on the site and send him/her a nice quick message with a tiny thumbnail preview of your best two or three images. If you feel like it, maybe add a link to your online portfolio and offer your services as contributing photographer. Nobody ever got a shot published by sitting at home and waiting for the media to call. Unless they're Annie Leibovitz, that is.  Smile

Good luck and buy me a pint with the proceeds of your first photo gig.

Andy, if you think they might be interested then of course contact them. I always contact the editor with relevant info and a small image or two. You can't go wrong. What can he say, no at worse!

Might as well shoot them an email my man. Like some have said, they can either say sure or say no. I am a Contributing Photographer for a number of aviation magazines but I don't have a constant stream of pictures getting used. So it's not like being a contributor will bring in the business to the point where you do nothing but edit and send photos to the mags. LOL!!! Go ahead and give it a shot. They are always looking for extra photogs to help them, plus you get to meet some really cool folks as well! I know I have!!!!! Some of the friendships I have made along the way have been very awesome friendships to say the least!
