Registration Help

Sun Nov 08, 2009 9:26 pm

I am not sure how to determine the registration for this aircraft. Could someone help me out?

For future reference, how do you know the registration for any military aircraft that doesn't have a N-number?

Thanks guys!

I think it is 58-0009. You need to look at the number on the tail as part of the registration. 58 is the year built ie 1958, and 0009 I think is the line number, but I might be wrong. You can see the '0009' on the nose, so I searched 78-0009, 68-0009, and 58-0009 on www.scramble.nl. 58-0009 came back as a KC-135 126th ARS from the WI ANG. Scramble isn't always correct, but I find it helpful tracking things down.

I also will use Anet as a reference. I search the aircraft type and look for similar serial numbers. That usually helps me narrow it down.

Yes, it is 58-0009. The serial numbers for USAF aircraft are based on the FY they were purchased, followed by a 4 digit sequence number. You will see a number of different formats for marking the serial on the aircraft. In this case, it's the last digit of the year and the sequence number, all as one number. Since the KC-135 was manufactured from 1956-1964, the only "8" it could be is 58.

In addition to Scramble, another great resource for USAF/USN numbers is Joe Baugher's site at http://home.att.net/~jbaugher/ He has a comprehensive listing of serial numbers, although you do need to have some idea of the format to know where to look.

This page is also real useful in tracking down registrations: http://users.rcn.com/jeremy.k/serialSearch.html

You can type in the last few digits of a serial number and it will give you the possibilities as to what it might be. Enter "009" and "KC-135" in the upper boxes and you quickly find that the only thing it can be is 59-0009.

Yes it is a great tool - it actually searches Joe Baugher's data.
