Best Digital SLR For Under $1000 US

Mon Nov 23, 2009 6:49 pm

Dear A-netters,

I was looking around at digital SLR cameras, mostly Cannon producs like the EOS rebel. It seems like a lot of Digital SLR cameras are now comming down under a grand, so I was wondering if anyone had an opinion* as to what is the best one under a 1000. My picture taking tasks would be (I understnad these may require buying more lenses than generally come with):

1. Landscape day and night.
2. In, on and around aircraft...like taking shots out of the side window of a 172.
3. The general stuff, family photos, et cetera.
4. Taking pictures, close ups of scars on people.

Your thoughts and input would be greatly appreciated.

*As if you have to wonder if anyone on this site EVER has an opinion, ha ha.

There are many options for camera bodies for under $1000. If you don't mind getting a model that is a couple years old, I recommend looking for a new 40D. It might be hard to find one new these days, but it's a damn good camera and would be a slight step ahead of any newer rebel IMO...unless you want video capability which the newest rebel has.

You can get a Nikon D3000 and a 70-300 VR for that price, or if you're willing to go used a D200 and a new 70-300 VR.

I second the comment about getting a 40D. I just bought an almost new one with just a few hundred shots taken for a less than 1000 USD.

I own a 450D which is quite good (but clearly not the best). I have tried the Nikon D90 (which was unfortunately too expensive for me) and it is just below 1,000 euros in Europe (I would not know how much is it in the US, though). I was quite amazed at the picture quality of some of the portraits I've done with it.

You have some reviews on the latest DSLR cameras on this excellent website: http://photozone.de/dslr_reviews (also very good and helpful for lens testing). Maybe it will help you out in your choice.

A lot of people go with Nikon or Canon but i'm personally a fan of sony. You can find some great deals on existing as well as previous generation cameras. I got an A200 (i'm actually looking for a more advanced model to upgrade to right now) and i've enjoyed it a lot. Just something to think about, it has a great range of lenses at great prices

Look for an a700 on sale or if you're not ready for that level yet you'll like the new a550.

Not having to buy lenses with Image Stabilization is a big plus for Sony's, as the stabilization is done in body. A huge benefit if you don't already have lenses and often overlooked.

If you're opting for Canon or Nikon: I picked up a very good condition used 40D this weekend plus the BG-E2 Grip and three batteries for $650 USD (I'm so psyched). I already had a lens.

FYI, Amazon has the 50D body only for $942.

Based on what you guys are saying about the 40D and 50D, with much thanks to those that had interesting things to say about the other models, would it be worth going slightly above my pricepoint for a new 50D...such as this one, for 1199 and includes one lens, keeping the idea that I could pick up a used one for less:

I do have SLR lenses from 35mm cannon cameras...what the younger set call vintage..all manual adjustments....can you still use those if you went with just the 50D body? Sorry, I know next to nothing about digital SLR and I'd rather trust your guys opinion than just getting confused reading tons of marketing authored crap online.

Amazon has the Nikon D90 with an 18-105mm VR lens for $1029 right now. This isn't the ideal aviation lens but this is an excellent deal overall.

IMO you would get a bigger bang for your buck if you went for a 40D. There have been many extensive debates over the 40D vs 50D and a lot of people out there favor the 40D. The 50D is an excellent camera but the price is still up there and the price gap between the two is growing. Grab a 40D while you can and put the money saved towards some good glass.

Ya I've been looking for a used a700 it seems like the perfect step up. I like the a500/550 but from what I've read it's basically a smaller a700

It's more like a beefed up a350. If you're ready for the "next step" in terms of user interface, build quality, etc. the a700 is the way to go. The a550 has the best image quality of any Sony APS SLR right now and some unique features, like the in-camera auto HDR that works without a tripod and produces non-funhouse results.

There's also going to be a new a7x0 probably in 1Q 2010 so you may want to wait too.

My friend had an A350 and it didn't really do anything for me, i'm not a big fan of the live view functionality. I think the A700 is where i want to go next just so that it will last me for a while, instead of going to the A500 and realizing in a year that i need the A700 and have to do all this again. I'm hoping there will be a new A700 soon and maybe some more A700s will come onto the market second hand so they will be a little cheaper to.

I used an A700 fr a day on the same settings as my A200 and the pictures were far superior on the A700 so it seems like a great camera
