Distortion In The Nikon 18-105mm VR Lens

Mon Nov 30, 2009 7:42 pm

Ok, so I am going to get rid of this lens, because frankly, at the wider end. it is awful (with the D90 at least). Two options, the 18-55mm VR 'kit' lens (which I thought was a fairly decent lens), or the 16-85mm VR. Does the 16-85mm lens fare any better as far as distortion is concerned?

If money was no issue, I would go for the 17-55mm f/2.8, but I lack the funds for it

Thanks

You could also try PTlens in Photoshop, as I believe it has a lens profile for the 18-105. It works amazingly well for automatic distortion reduction. It can also correct for perspective problems that you would normally need a shift lens for.

All three of the lenses you have mentioned suffer from barrel distortions, with the 17-55 f/2.8 having the least.

Your best bet is to fix it in camera, using the distortion correction feature, or in post processing (I prefer Capture NX).
