Photo Of Midwest Express DC-9 At LAX

Thu Dec 03, 2009 9:35 pm

Very often on here, a picture of the Midwest Express DC9 often appears under the 'Editor's Choice' and also as some people's photo Album image.

This is the one I'm talking about

Things is, I'm curious as to what is special about the image. It's not particularly good quality and I'm sure a DC-9 into LAX certainly isn't anything uncommon.

So what's the story behind this photo? Was the aircraft involved in some incident at a later date, or is there something special about the airline?

Looks fine to me considering it's a scan. Also, try to get into that position at LAX these days and see how far ya get!

As far as I kow that was chosen for ''editor's choice'' when Johan(set up a.net) was in charge. It probably caught his eye.Alos I don't think ''editor's choice'' is added too anymore.

I think that's it but I'm sure someone else can provide a better reason.

You have to understand that back when this photo was accepted, screening standards were nowhere near their current requirements. The site was much younger back then. Not to mention, widespread use of the DSLR wasn't the reality we take for granted today. Even so, this shot would probably make it in today considering that is is a scan and somewhat historical (given Midwest's recent demise). I believe the flight in question was headed to Kansas City (MCI) and that's certainly a long-haul for that type.

That's correct.  yes

Things are in the works. Stay tuned, and hopefully sooner rather than later you'll see big improvements with regard to "Editor's Choice".

I believe that is correct. Back in the early days of airliners.net, Johan picked his favorites and displayed them in the "Editor's Choice" section. However today, the function does not work/is no longer used so the same old photographs turn up on the home page. There has been some talk recently that a revamping of the Editor's Choice section is in the works. Honestly, I don't understand why they bothered to include it in the current homepage design if it doesn't work and is so outdated.

I gotta say, that one does see the light of day more than many of the others. Is the rotation random or does it cycle through all of them giving each a shot at the front page equally?

Thanks for all your replies. I wouldn't read too much into my comments about the quality, I appreciate it's from a scan and somewhat historic. I was more curious if there was some story behind the image that I wasn't aware of, causing it to be of such interest.

I like the photos from that period; just before digital started to creep onto the scene. We owe a lot to those chaps that were doing this before it was so easy. It still blows my mind that someone can now shoot, download to a notebook, edit and 3g images straight onto the 'net from the airport shooting spot, if they so wish.

Well I can tell you that Joe is one of the best photographers in the world when it comes to aviation photography. The man has been everywhere twice I think and his reputation precedes him. Though, I doubt that has much to do with the photo being an "Editors Choice", but he is world renowned with many of his shots. Just like many other photographers from the "older" days of ANet.

There weren't DSLRs when this photo was taken (1998).
