is really not as difficult to fly over as some people think ... when approaching I had a conversation with the controller (yes, it was dead enough to chat with him) and he said I could fly around in circles over the airport as much as I wanted about 1000' AGL. Try to fly in around sunset or maybe about 2 hours before it, the light angle is great for the yard area and the arriving traffic is almost none. The only traffic I had was an Allegiant MD
-80 that came in on the radios, not sure why. If you need a flight, I fly out of Santa Monica airport and have taken many people up to VCV
As for on the ground shots, that same friendly controller over the radios said they are quite strict with that unless you get a ground worker to take you around. I didn't care so much about ground because those planes are jammed in so close together, but the lady operating the front desk at Million Air said it's possible to get one of her coworkers to do so. It was freezing and getting later so I declined. So, walking around is no big deal if you want but not so sure about ground photos.
I know that was quite a bit, but I hope it helped coming from a SoCal private pilot who flies this area quite a bit. Best of luck to you in your trip here or anywhere else.
