Photo's In Q Increased Since New Allocations

Fri Dec 11, 2009 7:33 pm

Hi all,

Immediately after the re-vamp of the slot allocation system photo numbers in the Q seemed to stay pretty-much the same - something I didn't expect, however now the new system has settled it's obvious that the Q has swollen considerably. Whereas before I think the average per day was 700-900 we now frequently see the Q at 1100+. Luckily the team has done a brilliant job controlling this monster but I can't help thinking that images screened much faster somewhere results in reduced attention paid to each individual one and, ultimately, a dip in quality?

I may be very wrong but surely if the workload increases productivity doesn't increase with it? Perhaps we now have more new screeners and maybe each is putting in a monstrous effort? I don't know. I know myself that since the re-vamp I don't upload as many, and I'm aware that many seasoned folks don't either. Is the Q being filled mainly by enthusiastic 'noobs' perhaps? Has quality been maintained throughout the increase or is the increased number of generally poorer quality? Or are the veterans filling their slots to the maximum?

By the way, this isn't a moan as I'm pretty happy with the current system - it's simply a point to discuss in these times of limited forum activity. I for one would be interested to know why and in what ways the Q has increased.

Finally, kudos to the screeners, who seem to be working in over-drive this past week!

My uploading habits haven't changed significantly, aside from the fact that my max is 15 instead of 20 (or 30, as it were). Without any kinds of charts, graphs, or statistics we're kind of just waving our arms around. Overall, to me, things don't seem all that different in terms of processing things in the queue (my images were all screened before the last big push).

However, it does mean I'm going to put 15 images from my trip to the US Air Force museum in, and I won't worry one iota if one gets rejected (they are very tough shots). Peace of mind is a good thing.

Lower total queue means more daily uploads, we have always seen that. expect it to increase further as the queue drops and (hopefully not) decrease as the queue rises

Perhaps that's what it is - we're putting in more 'daring' images as the fears of losing slots via a ratio plummet are no longer relevant

I'll admit one small thing - lately I don't take the time I used to editing my images because if they get rejected it's not much of a concern. On the flip side however I've had quite a few accpetances lately with few rejections so work that one out, LOL!!!

So who's responsible for the Q increase? More daring veterans? Or equally daring newbies? Or a half-half split?

Yes, I didn't think of that Tim. And it is something I do when I see a low Q or one that is being cleared very quickly - add to it in order to take advantage of quick screening!

It'd still be interesting to discuss other possible factors/reasons.

We should visit this when the summer comes. Where IMO we will see a huge spike in uploads and possibly a 15-18k queue. With no fear of getting a pic rejected since it doesn't effect upload slots the floodgates may open.

Multiply that by 1000.

Well I have only uploaded a handful of images since the change. I still pay attention to my acceptance ratio as a measure of my personal success and was quite happy when it recently reach 80%. But then I got a little careless and uploaded a shot that probably shouldn't have been uploaded for quality reasons and it got rejected. I should have spent more time on the edit, but got a little complacent and submitted anyway.

Yup, same as last year when the queue dropped below 3000. The number of daily uploads jumped to around the 1300-1500 mark, which is even more than it is now. I don't think the allocation of more slots has had a significant impact (yet), so Karl, I think you're looking for something that's not there (yet).

As Nik said, I think we'll have to wait until summer to see if it will really have an effect.

Since all the fights previously (and the rude behaviour of a certain forum member) I don't contribute any photos or participate in the feedback forum. I do non-aviation photos by request.

I still browse the new additions and reply to some messages. I have to say, the queue still looks pretty reasonable at the moment, and we are seeing some interesting new photos.

To my eyes - the quality has remained fairly steady. The same contributors still contribute decent photos.

Is that not the very reason there had been such long standing opposition to changing the upload limit/rejection status.

Not having the risk of losing upload limits is NO excuse for reducing the effort put into your images.
If your camera sends text messages, that could explain why your photos are rubbish!

Photogs leave all the time and noobs come. I do have to say it has been for the better. If you look at the home page the photos have only gotten better. Much better and the borders and creativity have been pushed to the edge.

Very true but with the acceptance ratio out the window noobs or even good photogs will use the autopsy approach to improve their work instead of using the feedback forum.

I have to agree, planes against a blank sky indeed.   So you agree that all of your diatribes of negativity about the changes were misplaced, and it really is all for the better - okay?

I do love the constant flow of cabin photos - that makes me pleased.  Smile

Which has happened before, even with the acceptance ratio standards in place. As certain people have said in every "The queue is getting too long..." thread: So what if it takes two weeks to get your photo screened? What's your rush, it will get done eventually.

Maybe slightly off topic, and hopefully not grounds for deleting this post... I was just wondering how many photographers _total_ have ever submitted photos to the database. I don't just mean the photogs with 50+ shots, I mean the total overall number of photographers. Has anyone ever done a tally, or is there a link that I'm not finding?

Thx!!!

It really hurts if you get a rejection and have to upload again. Two attempts can take a month. That's no fun.

One has nothing to do with the other. The great photos we are getting would have been submitted even if the rule change didn't happen. The shots I have seen were not from the photogs that asked for the relaxed rules with uploading.

Especially if it is a info or category reject huh John?
