Your Own Favourite Of 2009

Mon Dec 21, 2009 11:10 am

Hi all,

To complement this thread Your Favourite Of 2009. (by 747438 Dec 17 2009 in Aviation Photography)
I'd like to ask about your own favourite one photo, taken and/or uploaded to Airliners.net in 2009. And please tell us why if there's a little story to tell!

Personally I don't have a huge favourite among my 2009 shots, but I'll pick this one.

Merry X-mas all and happy shooting in 2010!

A year of trying to get a St Elmo's photo that showed some real intensity you get in the tropics.
Far from easy as you normally get lots of turbulence which makes time exposure stuff the most difficult ive ever tried to do.
Pretty stoked with this one which now hangs in the board room of the company i work for.
Look forward to seeing some great images..
Merry Christmas

When I saw the runways being used that night I just couldn't contain myself. I knew I had an opportunity to capture the amazing view offered by that departure in a way I haven't seen before. Apparently luck does exist in Vegas!  Smile

From my whopping 9 photos accepted this year, I was very happy this one got in, as it breaks a few 'rules' in the screening process. My thanks to the screener(s), who saw the appeal of the photo before checking the rule book.

Edit: I forgot "the story to tell".   It was shot in a 10 minute "photo shoot" from my kitchen balcony, after finishing to pack my bag for holiday. I saw the awesome clouds and decided to have a shot, while waiting for my wife to get ready to go out for dinner. I was hoping for some heavies, but none came and this little bugger came out nicest.

My favourite image of 2009 is this one of a Tornado F3 exiting the HAS at the start of a sortie.
I like the way that the sunlight illuminates the front of the aircraft while the rest remains hidden in the darkness of the HAS. By going for a tight in crop using the 300 F2.8, I have tried to portray the F3 as being menacing.

Some great shots from people this year, lets hope next year is as fruitful.

For me, the following is my favorite of 2009. It might only be a boring side on rotation shot, but I love the wintery lighting and feel of this photo. It was taken on a freezing cold morning at Manchester when the low cloud and fog meant temperatures never got above -3C all morning. It was my first proper day out with the 50D and I had a great day. It's more the memories the photo brings rather than the photo itself, but I love the wintery feel of the photo.

I don't have many in the database, but this has to be my favourite so far. It was a horrid day at Manchester and the first time I was visiting this location. On the way the heavens opened, but I carried on and stood there in the cold and rain. The rain stopped and my luck came in as the 'Bearbus' appeared to make the trip worthwhile. Certianly brightend up my day.....however my feet were bloody freezing and wet

I spent a long day at DAL and DFW, was thinking about going back to the hotel as the light was 'going off' and was getting 'pretty fed up' of American Airlines aircraft.
I'd never managed to get any dusk images to look good so after messing with the settings in my camera and hoping that any shots would be ok, I was very pleased with the results.

My main reason being that I find it rather difficult to get anything a little 'different' at Manchester, given the restrictions placed on me by access and my 70-200mm lens. So I was pleased that this slightly different motive from the 23L threshold seemed to work - particularly the juxtaposition of the clarity of the Virgin and the hazed, shimmering American 767 underneath the wing, through the jet efflux.

Happy Christmas to all.

The text with the photo tells the story:

'A fitting subject for my 2000th photograph. Over 30 years ago in the sleepy Herefordshire town of Shobdon a very young boy went to his first airshow. A Vulcan displayed, creating indelible memories of overpowering noise and a huge alien shape leaping skyward. A lifelong passion for aircraft was born in an instant. But it was not until Cosford 2009 that I would see a Vulcan flying again...'

Jim

Nice thread Peter!  Smile

But a difficult one as well, as 2009 has seen many premieres and nice occasions and also more uploaded (and gladly also accepted) shots than the 3 previous years.

But this one really stands out:

I wanted this shot so badly after seeing the similar ones already here on A.net. I didn't know it would be so easy to get though, but after looking on Google maps and talking to the security guys at Caticlan, it couldn't have been any easier. Although the traffic is smaller here, it's much much lower than SXM and witnessing this approach is just awesome!

Although this year was one of my better years for getting picture accepted, they were all rather boring and none really stick out.

This one, though, I planned a month and a half in advance. I chose the MEM flight because I wanted a ramp overview of the FedEx facility, I chose this side because there weren't many pictures of the west ramp on A.net, and I was gambling and hoping that we would land on 18L. The only thing I did wrong was my seat wasn't far enough back or forward to minimize the wing in the shot. The seat map was misleading!

It did make 2nd place for Top Of The Day, so I was glad about that. It also has another interesting story, I had a prescreening thread about it, and a screener told me it was going to be rejected because the aileron was cut off a bit. I thought I had deleted it from the queue, but turns out I was imagining that, and was surprised to wake up to an acceptance email a week later!

The inaugural commercial flight into AKL of the A380, EK412 Feb 2 2009. I was hoping for a water cannon salute and I did get one! Luckily for me I spotted the fire trucks just in time and had the camera poised. But knowing the A380 windows, this was an extremely difficult shot to make with the equipment I had (If I had anything wider, it would have made the picture much better!) and involved a lot of cropping. The intention was to include the winglet but alas, there was a corner of window in my picture. But I'm glad it made it onto the site and into second place for the day!

Merry Christmas everyone!

Nicholas

I was invited on a training flight to Emden (Germany) by one of the guys (pilot on the left) who was in training on this King Air 300 that is based at my airport. We made several approaches to this small airport, but the last one was the best. We almost made a threshold-base approach, so we had a nice tight turn to the runway, as you can see on the photo.
I didn't have much time for the photo, but everything worked out perfectly!

While flying to Emden we also did some airwork, and I can tell you: steep turns in a BE30 is pretty awesome! Big grin

It is a very tough decision for me, I am torn between two shots. So I will post them both:

The launch of the new JetBlue livery. It was a wonderful celebration and I met quite a few great people. They even let me stay after the festivities so I could get a clean shot, and I became the first person to get it on A.net and it became my first #1.

I was getting ready to leave after sunset, packing up and ready to disappear
into the gloaming when our local EDI buddy Scott Wright screeches down
to the fence and says: "where are you going?"

15 minutes later this little beastie arrives.

I had to push the aperture wide open and hold my breath in the dying light.

My own favourite was one of a V.Australia B777-300ER low over Qantas Drive with some mindlessly silly traffic signs appropriately framed into the picture that make the whole thing seem ironic. I've tried for a long time to photograph that plane, it normally arrives at times when I'm not able to photograph it (either too dark, or at times when I'm busy).

I didn't upload it here though. I'm happy just to share photos of interesting or unusual sights on some forums I visit.  Smile

I've also managed to meet a few other people in the Sydney photographer community which is also quite nice.

Great thread.

My first full year after having moved to a larger city from a very small, remote northern city. So much more opportunity!

My favorite not just because of the aircraft - a beauty in any light, but also for the wonderful sunset light.

I found it really hard to come up with a top photo for the other thread, there have simply been so many!  Smile

This year has seen an increase in top-quality shots, not just in technical quality but in the ideas behind those shots. I think it helps that the screening team widened what was allowed a little more, but mainly it was good to see many more photographers trying to come up with their own ideas or being inspired by the work of others. With the break in the link between upload slots and acceptance ratio, I hope people will be willing to try more non-standard shots. Even I've started playing with ideas and I am probably one of the least creative photographers on this site!

It's been a good year here, creatively, I'm really looking forward to what 2010 brings. I've also chosen my photo for the other thread, thinking about it, how could I choose anything else?

Best regards,

Jim

I had never done any air to air until earlier this year but had managed a couple of quite successful sessions with Austers (I am the International Auster Club Photographer)

I turned up at Saltby, not too far from home to find the two rare Lunak gliders there. I got talking to the pilots and said that it would be great to do some air to air with one. They had never done a dual tow before but decided that it would be good opportunity to try. I flew with an old friend in the spare aircraft, a Rallye G-BKVA with the canopy open for a memorable flight. Working with the two gliders was also great experience in getting the job done quickly. I managed a lot of very decent images but this one was my favourite. I was surprised that it was not more popular due to its rarity though, far more imporatntly, the pilots and Gliding Club loved them

Without the Air Force people who were greeting the plane had not been so spectacular.

Hi everybody,

Well 2009 was a good year for me in that I got my first photo on the site after trying to get one on for a year, so it has to be this one for me:

My personal favourite would have to be my Dubai runway shot which was taken in December of last year but uploaded this year. It was taken out of the window of an Ek triple-seven as we turned onto the active. I took all of my photos on auto settings back then, making most of my images grainy with a lack of contrast, so I'm happy this one came out as it did. What I really like about it is the dark runway with the bright yellow lines on it, and the Ek A332 which departed ahead :

Hello everyone

This was really a great year for me as well! More than 300 pictures where added, and some crazy stuff was photographed! It was a year to put in use everything I ever learned, so I'm really happy with the result!

From my pictures, it was difficult to chose THAT one, since I have a couple of pictures that I really love for many reasons. But, this one must be the winner:

Since it was the first time I was able to capture such an exotic moment, it must be honored by me, so it will be my final choice in this 2009 Fav's

Merry Christmas everyone, and a Happy New Year xD

Best Regards,
Paulo

Quoting GPHOTO (Reply 15):
The text with the photo tells the story:

'A fitting subject for my 2000th photograph. Over 30 years ago in the sleepy Herefordshire town of Shobdon a very young boy went to his first airshow. A Vulcan displayed, creating indelible memories of overpowering noise and a huge alien shape leaping skyward. A lifelong passion for aircraft was born in an instant. But it was not until Cosford 2009 that I would see a Vulcan flying again...'

Best regards,

Jim

Jim, i can completely relate to that.
Something very similar happened to me, i have dreamt about spotting our military birds for as long as i can remember.
I've seen countless photos of our Top Fighter the Su-30MKI but never seen it in up close, i went to my first military airshow in 2009 & one of the first fighter to land in front of me was this >>>>

I was like DDDamn !!
Was absolutely blown away by it size, it was minimum 1.5 times as big as any other fighters on show & we had most of the modern fighters on show F16, 18, Eurofighter, MiG 35, etc..........
That has started such an incredible fascination for military aviation that i cannot describe  cloudnine

I have not been able to get out and shoot as much as i'd have liked this year due to a new arrival in the family, however this time i did get out as i had a free day and the weather was good! This photo was also my first to get in to the top five of the last 24 hours and was great to see one of my photo's on the front page.

Considering that I only upload old shots I had to dig into this years uploads. Tough to pick a favourite but I've decided on this one:

Several reasons. The weather gives a very nice atmosphere to the shot and it also was one of the first times I photographed an A340 which I still find the most beautifull plane type around. And a nice bonus is that this shot is the only one in the db featuring cn014 in Air France colours  Smile

Unfortunately due to some personal reasons, I've been a bit too busy to upload to ANet this last half of 2009, but my favorite for the year that's uploaded here this is it. This is it because when I started aviation photography I wanted the chance to take pictures of the L-1011. I fell in love with the airplane's lines (look) from the very start. It looked amazing how smooth and flowing the design of the L-1011 was. I made it a priority to get pictures of it and luckily, this year was THE year for that "dream" to come true. Not to mention, I got to visit part of this country that has always fascinated me. My favorite on this site for 2009 is....

My favorite of the year that isn't on the site is not aviation related at all honestly. It's related to surface coal mining back in my hometown in Kentucky. It's the Operators Cab of a 30+ year old Page Walking Dragline that's been refurbished. It will start work probably after the first of the year. This was a real pleasure to see up close and in person and see just how computerized it is and it will be. The touch-screen computer will go inside the space in the move-able arm and will provide the Dragline's operator with real-time information on their machine. It will tell them anything they want to know.

This is the view I captured while inside the cab. It's the view out of the front window!
