Finally Got It....

Wed Dec 23, 2009 5:11 am

Well for my B-Day I got a Nikon D300 with a 18-55mm lens and a 55-200mm lens. I went to KPHX and it was alittle overcast and I really didnt care I have always used a P&S camera and this is my first DSLR. So here are a couple shoots enjoy. And I am really open to constructive critism.

I was wondering why you would start off with a D300... that's some pretty good equipment to get started with. Seems you forgot a -0 though...(it's a D3000).

Anyway, looking at the originals, they look pretty good for your first shots. You might want to turn off the auto-ISO if you plan to do any uploading, and for editing, just watch your cropping.

Good luck and have fun!

Yes your are correct its a D3000. And I did some cropping was it to much? And I think I turned the ISO to 400. Still learning. Thanks for the comments,

Definitely auto ISO off and shoot at ISO200 while you're starting out. Also use aperture priority mode at F7.1-11 for aircraft until you learn how to properly use full manual.

Start here, maybe buy a book on CS4. Get a copy and just sit in front of that monitor and practice.

Looking through most of them, it looks like you cut at least some part of the aircraft off in the picture (nose, tail, wing). It's best to photograph the aircraft with some dead space around it so you can rotate and crop it later and still have the entire aircraft in the picture.

You are lucky to have such a nice airport so close  Smile

Like the others said, avoid auto and try to fiddle around with settings and check what happens. That's the good part of digital photography: you don't have to waste 50 rolls of film to learn Big grin

Framing, make sure you get all of the a/c in the frame, you cut off stabs and tips etc
Exposure, a bit overexposed
Editing, try the small but very important steps in photoshop, adjust levels, sharpening and colour.

I like your images though, they are not dull a/c on a blue background, keep it up and you'll be an ace in no time!

Jason -
I am in the same situation as you, but I have a Nikon D60. I browsed through your photos on flickr and they are really good! I went out yesterday to Sky Harbor to try and find some good spots to shoot from, but struggled a bit. Based on some of your pictures it looks as if you found some good places! Any tips/suggestions as to where to go at PHX?

Another PHX guy, here...

Other good spots are at the entrances to the Mohave South (west side of 24st just past Old Tower Road) and old Tonto East (East side of 24st just North of the I-10 overpass) employee lots. Find a place to park your car nearby and then just walk there. Landing and departing traffic will past right over the top of your head from those locations.

If traffic is west flow you'll want to be at South Mohave, if it is east flow, either lot will provide ample traffic up close.

I'm an airport employee, so I'll actually just show up to work a little early and shoot from within the lot for a bit.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who recently got a D3000 with the 18-55 and the 55-200 mm lenses...

I'm heading out to RDU (Sorry I'm not from the Left side of the country) tomorrow. I'm taking my little brother (he's 16 and not so little) to work the scanner and maybe the video camera.....

So far, I've had it for 3 days, and I love the D3000
