I'd recommend an entry level canon based on my experience.
Bodys like canon rebel XS or XSi along with a kit lens and a canon(tamron or sigma) 70-300mm.
That in my opinion is the best option for someone who is starting off with dslr's.
It's one of the cheapest options.
I don't have experience with nikon but someone else will surely tell you what they're like.

All the best,

Conor

Look at B&H Photo and video, they might have some entry level Sony DSLRs at good prices.

I've used that store many times - they are really reliable.

Everyone is going to tell yo to look at Canon or Nikon. But i went with sony and i love the alpha line. I'm actually selling my A200 since i just upgraded to an A700. They are a great company and there are a lot of great lenses, including some nice third party lenses as well. But i'm completely sold on the simplistic lineup of lenses and cameras that sony offers.

In response to Conor, I can say that Nikon is quite fine. Both Nikon and Canon are pretty hard to choose between. But they are expensive.

Another vote for the Sony line - decent bodies and pretty cheap (the A200 kit was only £249.00 at one point here in England).

If you're looking for a decent point-and-shoot, take a look at the Canon S90...

I am actually thinking of upgrading my G9 to the S90, it's quite the camera! As for what DSLR one should choose, I think the Canon 1000D would be a nice cheap start. There's plenty of excellent photos here taken with that camera.

Brickyard,

What's your price point? hard to make any real suggestions without that. One man's cheap is anothers extravagant.

I'm not sure where you live but if you're in a decent size town you should check out Craigslist.

Always plenty of used cameras on there. I've bought and sold several on Craigslist and I like it better than Ebay because you can go and put hands on the camera and check it out before buying.

Check Ebay for what cameras are going for and use that as a price target. I found that lots of people think their digital cameras are worth much more than they really are. These days lenses hold their value but used digital camera prices drop like a rock.

I'm a Nikon user so I can't comment on Canon prices but you should be able to get a D50 or D70 for under $200 and a D60 or 80 for under $400.
