Thoughts On Pentax K-x Dslr

Wed Dec 23, 2009 11:15 pm

Hello,

For the past few years I've meaning to upgrade from my Canon S5 IS to a DSLR camera, in order to take some good shots of airplanes.

I've been looking for DSLR's that can capture video, I have looked at a few like the Canon Rebel T1i, but recently I've discovered another camera that caught my eye, the Pentax K-x.

I've been reading the specs for this camera and it seems like a really good DSLR and its for sale at a good price, I'm new to plane spotting and just wanted to know what you guys think of this camera.

I found one photo in the database of a 772 landing at ORD and I think the photo quality is very good.

Here's a page with the specs: http://www.pentaximaging.com/slr/K-x_Black/

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks!

Hi,

I guess I'm the resident Pentax shooter on the boards here (all my shots in the database are with Pentax bodies), so I'll do my best to help you out.

First of all, it's kind of difficult to judge the quality of any camera based on the scaled-down shots on a.net, so don't rely on that too much as a guide.

Second, to be honest (and I've repeated this many times), in terms of image quality, most entry-level DSLRs are pretty close. Where I find Pentax excels is in the ergonomics (similar features but smaller bodies compared to Canon/Nikon/Sony) and price (again, same feature set, but often at a lower price).

In short, I think you would do fine with the K-x, but I if you're serious, you'll also want to consider getting a decent lens to go along with it. If you decide to go with the K-x and need advice about lenses, let me know.

Dpreview has just put up their review of the K-x, and it's pretty favorable, so you might want to check it out also.

If you need any other help/advice, let me know.

The K-x would have been recommendable from me with no reservations if they didn't make one gigantic blunder - the eleven autofocus points are not visible in the viewfinder. They don't exist at all. If you're using wide area focus, you have no idea what point has acquired focus. Something to keep in mind. If you can live with no visible AF points, I think you'll like the camera a lot.

I'm also shooting with a Pentax (K10D) and I'm very satisfied, if you want to use the camera for spotting get the Pentax 55-300 and you are good to go. I also use that lens and for its price it's very good. I used it for most of my shots in the database between July 2008 and now.

The k-x seems to be a very good camera, I love the Pentax ergonomics and the materials used for the bodies. I had a K100D Super before and imho it was far superiour over other entry level cameras concerning build quality.
Missing AF points wouldn't be a problem for me since 95% of my pictures are made using the center point and you are also still able to see the selected point on the status display on the back when switched on.
