Best Spotting Location (SYDNEY)

Thu Dec 24, 2009 2:25 am

Just moved from Melbourne to Sydney.

Where is the best location to spot? I've been near the Rocks area near Cronulla on the ED entry but no where else has really hit me of where to go?

Any advice?

Cheers

Carl.

Google SpottersWiki Sydney, or also seach for YSSY Forum.

That should be a good starting point.

Weebie, SO many places... Morning time probably best from the Shep's Mound or 34R/16L mound as well as the Eastern end of Qantas Drive, Late afternoon and early evening you have the Beach, Dog Park, International Terminal, Western end of Qantas Drive, etc etc but it really depends what type of shots you'd like to get and what runway they are using!

Like Cpd says, check Spotters Wiki and use Google Maps to find where you want to go.

Shep's Mound

That location is now very poor. The ground is a mess, you'll get stuck in a normal car very easily, and the view is littered with light posts and other obstructions.

The best locations seem to be:
- Qantas Drive (RWY16R and RWY16
- Dog park
- International Terminal at Sydney Airport
- The Beach (carpark beside the old ATC towerr)
- The fence beside RWY16R/34L (access from the beach area), take a ladder for this location

There are a few other locations, but access is either difficult, not allowed, or only if you have friends in high places.

If you want to spot (with binoculars) you can do it almost anywhere. If you want to take photographs then any of the places listed in the last reply are fine.

The Beach. Heading south from the M5, keep on the left or the second left lane. As you pass the Cooks River Bridge, keep left and slow down, there shoild be a turnoff to the left, go around and do a 360, under the bridge which you just came over on, and into the gate. You should see a couple of fishermen, then park your car at the nearby carpark. Shoot from there or go pass the concretet barrier and onto the beach. And walk towards the airport until you reach the fenceline. There should be a grass area with a couple of rocks, grab a rock (or if youre lucky there will already be one left by the previous spotter) and lean it against the fence, or if you don;t wanna do that there's a small hole in the fence towards the right. And enjoy!
