Lens Advice Needed For Nikon D 90

Fellow photographers,

I'm considering to buy a new lens for my D 90, which should be a notch above my lens which I have since 2001: Sigma 70-300 1:4-5,6 D APO Macro Super (at that time about 250-300 %u20AC). But the quality is too low to achieve a reasonable standard for this database now.

So I'm veering between:
Nikkor AF-S DX 18-200mm 1:3,5-5,6 G ED VR II (850-900 Euro) or
Nikkor AF-S VR 70-300mm/4-5,6 G IF ED (550 Euro)

or yet a Sigma lens? Perhaps
Sigma 4,5-5,6 120-400 OS APO HSM? (750 Euro) or the new one
Sigma 4-5,6/70-300 DG OS (400 Euro)?

The price could be in a range between 500 and 900 Euro.

Thanks for any advice and comments.

Roland,

You need to consider the focal lengths you use most of the time, that will aid in assessing the best lens for you. You've listed a pretty wide range of focal langths there from 18mm - 400mm!! If you want something that wide, the 50-500 will be ideal (I use one) but if most of your shots are taken at say 100-200, then a 70-200 might be best.

How is the quality of the Nikkor AF-S VR 70-300/4-5,6 G IF ED compared with the Sigma 70-300?

You can check these links. The Nikkor got a pretty good review, although it gets a little weaker at the very long-end (300mm)

If you don't mind the price difference between the two, then it would seem the Nikkor would be the better bet.

I don't know about the quality of the Sigma, but the Nikkor 70-300 is a great lens considering the price, it is true it becomes softer at the high end but it is the same for nearly all zoom lenses. The Nikkor 18-200 isn't worth considering in my opinion, it is not the sharpest lens Nikkor made in it's history.

Thank you for the responses. If a screener says, the Nikkor is a grest lens, I will most likely take this one. And thanks for the review links.

Rol,

I've got a D90 as well. I use the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 and add the 1.4 tele extender when I need a little more range. I have been very happy with that combination on the D90. I've considered moving up to the Sigma 100-300 f4 but haven't convinced myself yet.
