Looking To Get Back In

Thu Mar 04, 2010 10:36 pm

Greetings! After a lengthy hiatus from aviation photography, I am looking to get back in again. I haven't shot too many photos since 2006 due to a new job. I have been fairly busy since then and now I have a decent amount of time to restart the hobby. I was shooting with a Canon 10D but at this point I am looking for an upgrade since it has been several years. Unfortunately I have seen many people that have been relatively unimpressed with the Canon 50D, but I'm curious if it's really that bad. Any tips and suggestions are appreciated, thanks!!!!!

Welcome back, Tim!

Don't read too much into the 50D complaints. It's an excellent camera and many people have them here. If you can find one, the 40D would be an excellent and cheap alternative. Most of the 50D complaints came from former 40D users who realized maybe the upgrade wasn't worth it.

I look forward to seeing some new stuff from you.

I agree with the above - being a 50D owner I really can't see where the complaints came from. Before I purchased I too read all the negative stuff, but thought the only way to really test it would be to have a play with it with my own hands.

Very noisy I heard them say - well it's no noisier than my 30D and that was a FINE machine! Doesn't resolve detail very well I heard them say - well it looks pretty good on my screen! Granted, there's not the extra detail than one would perhaps expect when compared to a 40D's images but there's a great amount retained none-the-less.

Better weather-sealing and anti-glare screen make it a pretty nice camera if you ask me!

Thanks gents for the info and encouragement!!! I own a pretty decent amount of Canon glass so I really didn't want to transition to Nikon, even though I might be mildly envious of a friend of mine's Nikon D300s (if I'm not mistaken of the model). I'm hoping I'll get back into it this month. Again, more input from anyone would be appreciated, and thanks again for the input already! Please feel free to contribute more if you care to!

TW,

The D300 is one heck of a camera so I hear and certainly blows the 50D away - however you can always rely on Canon to provide some great glass. Swings and roundabouts, as they say.....

If you have Canon glass already why switch?

Karl, you have a very good point! I really like my Canon L glass and I can't really see myself switching to Nikon at this point, even though I might be highly impressed by their camera line. I'm thinking that I'll probably go for the 50D as I can't quite justify the 7D. Either way I am looking forward to getting back to the hobby. Thanks again!

All in all I am sure you will be happy if you decide to buy a Nikon, lenses are great and think cameras are at the moment probably the best around.
The only thing is if you already have lenses it would be cheaper to buy another Canon.
The weakest link in the chain would probably be the photographer as the boundaries of what is possible with a camera (any brand) are really far away.

I am thinking about buying a new camera myself, and I am torn between exactly these 2 cameras.

There is one killer argument that definitely makes me swing towards the 7D though, and that's the significantly improved metering system, that reportedly delivers better focusing and exposure results when shooting fast moving objects - like aircraft.

The recently introduced 550D will feature the same metering system, but the housing and CF card support speak for the 7D - even though the 550D will probably come for half the price, which could again leave me undecided. The money I'd save with the 550D could as well go into a new lens.

Anyway, I would not give too much about the negative reports you read on the internet about any camera. There is so much bs out there. I don't think that any of the major DSLRs really has significant disadvantages, so I'd focus on the features rather than on negative user reviews.

Fellas,

Read the thread titled 'Anyone using a 7D?'. I have been comparing images from the 50D and 7D this afternoon (same aircraft shot from the same spot, same time/day with the same lens) and you'd be very surprised at how little difference there actually is. Yes, the 7D has the better metering, faster image burst and 1080p video but is that really worth the extra you pay? The metering, etc. may ASSIST in getting the better exposure but if you're competent enough you should be able to get a perfect image with any camera. It's perhaps making it easier rather than better.

Anyway, as I've stated in the other thread I will post the comparison image later (when I have more time) - you'll see that the exposures, contrast, colour, sharpness, etc. are extremely similar.
