Finepix S1800: Good Enough For Uploads?

Fri Apr 02, 2010 4:18 am

hello all. i am an aviation enthusiast and would love to get some pictures uploaded onto a.net! i have a fujifilm finepix s1800. its a 12mp camera with 18x optical zoom. does a camera like this that is set at it's highest resolution and best settings with correct post-photo editing suffice for a.net quality? or do i need to shell out more money for a digital slr?

Hi,

The short of it is yes, it should be possible to get upload quality shots with that camera, under certain conditions.

The long of it would be the conditions that would need to be met to get up to the right quality:

First, you'll be limited to shooting in bright sunny conditions. Anything overcast or with lower light will definitely lead to more noise than would be acceptable for here.

Second, you'll have to get pretty close to your subject. A super-zoom such as yours makes compromises on quality to fit all of that zoom range in such a compact body, and you'll really notice it towards the longer end of the zoom. Anything farther away than 2x - 3x zoom (50-100mm equiv.) will likely be too compromised for quality.

Third, you'll have to be pretty good with your editing techniques so that you can cover up/compensate for the lesser quality you'll be getting out of the camera.

If you think you can meet those three conditions (you'll pretty much need to meet all of them), then go for it, and you can post in the feedback forum before you upload. If you don't think you can meet all three of those conditions, but still really want to be able to get stuff uploaded, then you'll probably have to consider a better camera. If you're not too worried about uploading here, then your camera should be more than enough for you.

Hope that helped a bit,

Dana

Dave, I think Dana summed it up quite well there. I use my Canon G9 quite a bit, especially onboard the flights I take. The majority of all my latest (last 2 years) window shots are taken with the G9. You can only try at the end of the day and if you fail then bang them on myaviation instead.

thank you two very much, especially dana. there are a couple spots at my home airport (khsv) where, if the winds are cooperating, i can get close to the action. as far as editing goes, i've read the very appreciated tutorial on here where the klm b777 is used, and i think i get most of it right, but not sure if i'm using the eraser tool correctly. what opacity and brush size are recommended? just click and drag on areas where jaggies appear, then flatten the image after all erasing is done?

I used my Canon Powershot A610 for years before purchasing a DSLR, and through those years using the Powershot, I had 107 photos accepted.

So yes, the S1800 will certainly be usable - just look for good lighting. Good luck!
