Farnborough 2010 - What's The Deal?

Wed Apr 07, 2010 4:35 pm

Hi folks,

I'm thoroughly considering going to Farnborough 2010 this year but I wanted some advice from those who have been before or know a bit about what to do at airshows. So, at Farnborough, are there any specific spots which are good? What's the best time to arrive? Any interesting visitors? Restrictments? Also, I'd love to know all of this information on the RIAT at Fairford this year.

This will be my first airshow so many thanks in advance.

Don't know about Farnborough- maybe try and work there as a driver- you get to drive VIPs around!
For RIAT- under 16s go free (don't know how old you are?)
there is a thing called park and view (see my post)
The actual show is amazing- worth leaving v. early in the morning
- I left at 7.00 and I only live 30 miles away!- this is due to the traffic and parking.
Its a huge site- walk up and down the apron- 5 hour flying display etc etc....check the website. i found that taking photos of the display was quite hard from the viewing areas as there would always be poles and tannoys etc in the way- for that reason it might be worth trying to get a grandstand seat. Very boring though- if you move- your seat is nicked! (i think!)

Thanks for the reply! As a teen, I can go for free! I live an hour and a half away according to google maps!  Do you know what time the show starts? Is it worth getting there ''first thing''? I would probably get a grandstand seat or a jubilee garden seat. Do I as an under 16 still have to apply for the general admission ticket?

Many thanks,

-Alf

You are free when accompanied by an adult.
Get your dad to buy a ticket- then grandstand or jubilee garden is payed on top of that! Book now as it is marginally cheaper. Tell your dad the 40 odd quid is WELL worth it. I went last year- epic!
Hope this is helpful

It says you have to pay for the other tickets (Ie - granstand, jubilee garden) on top of the general admission. Do I just turn up on the day with no ticket and they'll let me in?

Correct! Make sure you have your student ID card with you though, just incase they question your age (they're not normally fussed).

Farnborough Airshow is fantastic, you'll get great shots of the Business jets flying in the morning before the air show programme starts. The sun shall be behind you all day and the crowd line is very close to the runway.

You'll love RIAT! A passport will be fine, anything that proves your age. I'm not sure what you look like, but generally they're not too worried about the age thing.

RE- RIAT yeah- there not too bothered- I will continue to go as an "under 16" for a few more years. there is big security there though (airport style, but in a tent) so get there early so you don't have to queue for ages!
