Tamron 55-200 Mm Lens?

Tue Apr 27, 2010 6:44 pm

I'm still pondering about lenses guys! I am able to buy, nearly new, a tamron 55-200 lens for 70 pounds. Is this a good lens for aviation, or shall I save up another 100 quid and get the canon 55-250? ie- for the price is it worth it, or are there some major flaws in it? thanks

What camera are you using? How much is the Canon 55-250? You may want to save up even a little more and get the cheapest Canon 70-300 or Sigma 70-300.

i'm using a canon 450d. the canon is around 180 pounds, canon 70-300 (is) is around 400 pounds- so it speaks for itself really. the 70-300 is obviously a better lens, but perhaps I could try and get a 70-300 non IS- although reviews say that the 55-250 is better than that. what i really want to know is the competition between the 55-250 (canon) and the 55-200 (tamron). I know that the canon has IS, and the tamron has a macro feature, but how do they both perform in comparison to each other? in terms of aviation photograhy and other uses as well?

I'm not at all familiar with the Tamron line of lenses, sorry.

If you DO go with Canon, the 70-300 non-IS (don't forget there is also a 75-300 series of lenses for a bit cheaper!) is definitely light enough that you can use it easily without the stabilization.

The 55-200 is actually a fine little lens, provided you won't miss IS and don't mind a lot of plastic in the construction. The optical quality actually seems quite good from what I can see.
