Help!My Pictures Are Gone!

Sat May 01, 2010 1:23 pm

Hey guys,

I went to St. Maarten last August and of course I took a lot of pictures.
I have a Canon EOS 450D and unfortunantly I had a 8GB memory card with me.

So when I came home I inserted the memory card into my laptop and moved a few pictures into an extra folder.
Then I took the card out of my laptop.

The next time I inserted the memory card my laptop wouldn´t detect the card anymore. So I tried it with my moms computer-it didn´t work either.

Then I formated the card to try to restore the pictures but nothing helped.

I really want those pictures back since I made some really nice shots.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you

You FORMATED the card in order to restore the pictures!?
Bad move!

Did you get the message that "all your pictures will be removed when you format the card"?

Because that's what happens when you do that. Maybe you'll be able to restore a few files with a dedicated software. I don't know any of those by heart though but maybe one of the other guys knows one...

Good luck!

Thierry

P.S.: the right thing to do would have been to go to a computer specialist and have him restore your files BEFORE you format the card.

Yeah, it said that all pictures would be deleted but I thought I could get my pictures back by deleting and restoring after since I have a photo recovering program.

Thanks for your help

From my understanding and use, (somebody correct me), the recovery programs work best unformated i.e. you need to run the program as soon as you detect the error prior to any more sectors getting overwritten or disrupted.

you might have cooked your goose.

A recovery program will only work on an UNFORMATTED partition. When you delete information, the individual bytes are not completely erased. The information is still technically there until it is replaced by something else (a new file, or a new image). However, when you FORMAT the drive or the memory card, it will delete the information and then replace what is on each byte with basic binary code (0 or 1) in order to provide a place-holder for the new information to come later. Therefore, since your old pictures have now been replaced, they are, in theory, gone forever.

What has happened to you is exactly why I do not use big memory cards. I carry 6 or 7 smaller, 2GB cards, so that if one gets corrupted or erased, I've still got all my other photos.

That´s smart.I´ll do that too from now on.

Looks like I screwed it this time.
Thanks for your help though.

Julian,

Does your computer recognize the card now that it is formatted? As long as there isn't a hardware malfuntion on the card you should be fine. I use Image rescue from lexar media and that will recover pictures from a formatted card. if you just do a quick format from the camera it does not actually write over all the data. I beleive it just zeroes out the first byte of each file. To erase all the data requires a much longer process and takes about 20 minutes.

Using ImageRescue I have recovered pictures before from a formatted card several times.

In 2008 due to an issue i had to format my card while having shot some real exotic traffic.
Obviously the circumstances were such that they warranted euthanasia.

We came back home to my friends place where i was put-up with our hearts elsewhere,
his 16-17 year old brother looks at us & understands some big s*** just happened,
he takes his time in asking us,
we tell him in a nutshell - he says 'hah, big-deal'
so he googles some data recovery software > it dosent do the job.
we download another one & Viola !!

Did you tell momma to spank the card ?  box
That's usually advised in such cases, maybe the card would've been a bit more accomodating then  biggrin

No it doesn´t.Nothing happens. But if I insert it into my camera it says "card not formatted".
I might just try going to a specialist or just give up and hope to visit St. Maarten again some day.

Not entirely true, it erases the data of what's on the card and where, not the content itself. That's why a recovery program can restore data by reading patterns on the memory as every file has specific identifiers.
A hard drive needs to be formatted and re-written 50-60 times to be semi certain that the data is unreadable, only way to be sure is to shred the disk physically.

Julian, there are numerous companies out there that does data recovery, and 8GB worth of memory card recovery costs far less than a new trip to SXM, even though I'd guess the latter is money well spent
And as has been pointed out, there are software solutions out there to buy, and some of them has demos that allows you to check if the program can identify the data. If it can, purchase the full version and restore your images!

One more thing in addition to what's already been said. Do not write anything new onto the card. I believe deleted or formatted data can be recovered best as long as no new data has been written to the card.

Something similar happened to me a few years ago. I was able to recover some, but not all of my photos. It's the absolute worst to have this happen after a special trip!

Good luck!

7 times should do it. The process the to-be-deleted file goes through during this process is called shredding.

This is true. If you quick formated it, you should be able to recover the data, or at least some of it quite effortlessly.

Do not use this card to save pictures on it until you recover all pictures.
Use card reader and Easy Recovery Proffesional by OnTrack. This combination works perfect. I recovered from damaged hard drive all data and all deleted images from my card. Even if you formatted you can restore it.
Good luck!
