Pelican 1510 Case.

I'm going to be going to Washington DC in October and I've been looking on what is going to be the best way for me to transport my camera gear on the plane with me. I've also got a 17" MBP that needs to come along with me. I've got a Canon backpack that I can fit most of my gear into and I had been planning on going with that plus a laptop satchel for the laptop. But, I'd not be able to carry everything.

Over the weekend, I ran into another spotter at SJC who had a Pelican 1510 with the padded dividers and it looks like it might be the ticket plus the laptop satchel for my MBP/iPad.

Here's the gear I'd be trying to go with me....

Canon 5D MKII with the Battery Grip
100-400 IS Lens
70-200 2.8 IS Lens
24-105 IS Lens
24-70 2.8 IS Lens
Speedlite 580 EXII
4 Batteries
2 chargers
Rocket air blower, CF cards, etc.

Obviously the Pelican case would be going into the overhead bin but, both coming and going I'm on a UA 767 so I'm not sure if this is going to fit wheels in. I'm in the Economy Plus section and will be boarding after the First/Premier people so I don't think finding the overhead space is going to be a problem but, I'd love to know if this will go wheels in etiquette-wise. If it won't I guess I'm just going to have to be a space hog and put it in sideways.

Hopefully this would mean that my laptop satchel is considered my personal item and I put that under the seat ahead of me.

Does anyone here have any experience traveling with this case and what are you thoughts on it?

Ok, I meant Pelican 1510, not 5150, got crazy on the brain. How do I contact a mod to edit the title?

Hi Chris,

I am pretty sure all your equipment should fit into the 1510. I found the following photo online and I could see your 70-200 and 100-400 fit flat in the narrow (upper) side. The 5D can go sideways in the wider (lower) section, even with the battery grip. There will be enough space left for the other two lenses and the flash (plus all the accessories).

PS: Make sure you get the "Pelican 1519 Lid Organizer" for the case, as it is really good for storing all the other odds and ends you carry.

Which is a interesting option.

Also, my 24-70 2.8 lens is NOT a IS lens. My fingers were just on autopilot.

I'd still like to know how well it fits in a overhead bin though.

Personally, I'd use the LowePro CompuTrecker as my bag of choice. I carry a LOT of gear in mine, and the laptop slot between the straps and the camera compartment is super secure and safe. Also, I've found that because it's on your back it attracts far less attention as a "camera" case than a Pelican does.

And the biggest bonus IMHO is that when it's on your back (super comfortable straps BTW) it leaves both your hands free for tickets, drinks, etc and your arms don't feel like they're stretching!

The idea of a hard case was appealing to protect against the usual cramming people do to get things into the overheads. But, the idea of a backpack is nice too.
