Help Opening Canon CR2 Files In CameraRaw

Tue Sep 14, 2010 4:57 pm

Hi folks,

after weeks of failures..I need your help eventually!

I shoot with a Canon Eos 7d and a 450d, both in RAW format that after downloading to my notebook are saved as CR2 Format.

When trying to open them in PS (Cs3 version), I got the same error message saying it can't open the file because is the wrong type (or something similar).

I have also updated PS with the Camera Raw Plug-in obtained directly from Adobe site and also the updates from Canon website for both the cameras, but nothing seem to improve!

can you help me? It seems a problem quite popular among Canon users.

Thanks in advance
Simone

Well, CS3 doesn't support the 7D, so you're out of luck there.

But assuming you're using the newest Camera Raw (4.6), you should be able to open 450D files. Make sure you have the file type dropdown in open set to Camera RAW. This will force it to open up the file in ACR.

Simone,

You might want to try Adobe Lightroom for your RAW conversion needs. It's cheaper than a new copy of PS and is a great tool for batch development. Plus, it has a 30 day demo. It uses the same engine as Adobe Camera RAW.

It means the Camera Raw for PS3 do not support the RAW files coming form the 7D or that in any case I could not open them on PS3?

In the first case I will try something else for the RAW conversion (as by you suggested the LightRoom). In the second case I could uninstall PS3 because it has become useless.

It's a pity since I got used with a kind of workflow from Camera RAW to PS3 for my images.

Thanks
S.

You can still use PS3, you just need to convert your CR2 files to DNG files (they are still RAW files, just Adobe's RAW format instead of Canon's). Look on their website for the latest version of "Adobe DNG Converter". It's a free stand-alone application and you just insert it in you workflow before you import the images into PS.

I am a big fan of Lightroom, but it is way overkill if all you want to do is convert your CR2 files to DNG.

Here is a good resource about the DNG file format on Adobe's website, with links to the DNG converter on the right hand side.
