Lucky ME! Late Afternoon A380 LAX Arrival

Thu Sep 30, 2010 5:03 am

I was waiting for my family to arrive from Europe this afternoon when out of the blue, a Qantas A380 lines up in the distance for landing. The Melbourne and Sydney arrivals are always at 7a and 9am. There were other spotters in the area and they were all surprised to see this big bird's late afternoon arrival. After further research, I've confirmed that this was flight QAF93 from Melbourne.

Does anyone know why this flight came in so late? Just curious!

I can't tell you exactly why the flight was delayed but the aircraft that ended up operating QF93 ,VH-OQE, arrived about 13 hours late in Melbourne from London (luckily for me at a perfect time for a late evening shot). This pushed back the departure time for the the Los Angeles flight considerably. Someone else may have an answer for why the flight was delayed out of London to start with.

Hope this helps a bit.

Maybe its a coincidence, but I shot VH-OQE day before yesterday at Singapore, arriving (presumably) from London with hydraulic problems (the undercarriage doors remained extended during final and landing).

Long shot that this is the reason why it may have been delayed.

I don't think that is a long shot at all. The aircraft that operates QF10 which arrives early in the morning usually operates QF9 which departs in the afternoon. Instead yesterday 747 ferried down from Sydney to operate QF9.

Often (I can't remember exactly which days) an A380 will ferry down from Sydney in the morning and operate QF93. It could be VH-OQE was originally due to fly to Sydney and then ferry down to Melbourne. With the possible issue in Singapore maybe there was an aircraft swap which had VH-OQE fly direct into Melbourne albeit many hours late and operate QF93.

This is all speculation but it at least makes some sense to me. Either way yourself, some spotter in Los Angeles and I had some interesting photo opportunities.

Speculation, yes. But interesting all the same! And it sure did make for a rare photo op for me personally.

Kind of off topic but after reading this posts it struck me again of how interesting of a hobby we all have. Here an a/c traveling thousands of miles and practically across the world having been photographed not only on departure and arrival but also the days previous flight still thousands of miles away. Not to mention the ability to share this information so quickly and freely across the forum. If you really take a look at it, its quite amazing. just my
Oh, it's a big pretty white plane with red stripes, curtains in the windows and wheels and it looks like a big Tylenol.

Correct, in fact it had 2 unrelated hydraulic failures.

Cheers
