Hi ,
Most known place is the O'Hare Aeropsace center near Lawrence/ Mannheim intersection at Scott St (USG parking lot). All traffic at rwy 28. Usually all cargo , sometimes european aircrafts. Pretty nice view of all traffic inbound and outbound of ORD.
Allstate / Target area - arrivals at rwy 22R / 27R. Since rwy 27R was open runway 22R is mostly used when we got S winds ( with rwy 14R).
York Rd (west) at rwy 10. All heavies , including european arriving there.
Irving Park/ Seymour - rwy 04R arrivals , 22L departures - mostly smaller a/c's - domestic flights.
There are more places with higher risk of police supervision...
Enjoy!

Here's a Google Map I made for ORD. It's publically editable too: http://bit.ly/aqes7r

Nice job with this map. I add some spots that I like. I think you know them.
I didn't mark hills on York rd at 10 because in last days there is a higher activity of police/security. We , members of ORD airport watch are familiar for security/police so in case of catch on hills or other strange places (like USPS parking lot at cargo) we can explain our situation...

Wasn't there a thread on here about 3 months ago that said ORD was setting up a linup with llocal spotters that would include area police departments?

The link seems broken but you guys probably covered all the spots. The program is called Airport Watch and was started with the Bensenville police department and the Aviation world store.

I just clicked the link and it's still good. It has to be the original link though, not the "quoted" link. Here it is again: http://bit.ly/aqes7r

I am also a founding member of the airport watch thru Aviation World. So far I have never been confronted with police questioning, but have heard plenty that have been. MAKE SURE you are on public property... side street to the west or a sidewalk near a street.

Right , but about two weeks ago I saw four peoples in three cars that left their cars just at York Rd (they didn't even trying to find a place to left their cars off York Rd) and run on west side hills to see aircrafts landing. They wasn't local spotters... In about 5 minutes three police cars arrived and they ask them to leave area. I was staying on Beeline and police didn't ask me what I am doing here. Next day one police car show up 3 times during my spotting time. Some people don't know how to use a brain...

The hills are not meant to have many people up there. Otherwise police come very quick. I have been there several times but police have come only once. Be careful.

Best way to climb there is not be seen by anybody. When you sitting there try to not be visible from York rd or from perimeter road behind airport fence. Right now they mowe grass and bushes and top of the hill is clear...
BTW it is not normal that someone is jumping and waving in place like this.

I usually sit down when I'm on the hill and nobody can see me. When the police came I was with someone else who kept getting up and therefore someone saw him and called the cops. You can climb up from the side so that there's less chance of someone seeing you climb. The things we do for our hobby!

I am not sure how to edit the map but add this location as well.

42.005192,-87.930636

Good for runway 32R departures and quite low key. It is a truck turnaround circle. Not too much traffic takes off on 32R but some days they have all European departures take off from it and also Air Force One always uses this runway.

Hey Ivan , I aready mark this location. It is at the end of Mt Prospect Rd right?
I remember that spot when there was no airport gates only abandoned building with truck docks , some trees and auto bodyshop. I climb on that building couple of times and enjoyed beautiful view of airport with Chicago skyline in background. I got some pictures I have never published.
Here are some examples from that times:

Yes, the 767 is landing on 10. It is shot from the hills which we talked about above. The second one is landing on 27R and is shot from the north side at the end of Wolf rd. That spot is marked on the map as well.

Hello guys, I too am going to ORD in 3 weeks. I was wondering if they are not using 28/27L to land. Would they be using 10 for takeoffs as well? The United picture above looks like the 777 and 744 are heading for 10. It seems like if they are using 10 that the USG parking lot/Scott street would be good for runway 10 takeoffs.

Thanks

Runway 10 is rarely used for takeoffs and if it is it will be something heavy. I've seen them use runway 10 but it is not very common. Otherwise yes the USG parking lot is not bad to get the head on takeoff shot.Gabriel was at the right place at the right time I would say

We were together with Frank Robitaile on the hills that day.
Last days rwy 10 /28 was used for departures. We had 180 wind so the same runway was used once as 10 once as 28 (eg. two departures from 10 , three from 28 , one from 10 etc) . I was trying to get N542UA on saturday and was waiting at York Rd for 28 departure but take off was from 10... I didn't make it. I couldn't be on the other side when heard on radio "United 17 runway 10 clear to take off ".

Don't they make a hard right after lifting off runway 10? Would the USG still be good? Can't wait to get back to ORD. When does the next runway open/close?

Usually they banking left or flying with runway heading. USG parking lot is good . I got some pics of saturday early morning cargo series deparure. I got one pic that showing main gear brakes dust coming off wheels when brakes stopped spinning wheels after lift-off. This was takes at USG on 10 departure.
Next runway will be 10C/28C (existing 28 will become 28R). Right now there is only half of runway ready and from I-294 driving south there is X-mark visible on runway surface. Actually Phase II is partially done - 3000ft extention of rwy 10/28. Second part of Phase II will be rwy 10C/28C opening ceremony but date and time is unknown...

Try to imagine six parallel runways and construction site to build them... They got three ready and half of next runway (it will be 28C) is complete.

I mean it's gonna suck from a spotting and photography point of view. For photography you basically have the same possible angles(relative to sun, sky, etc...) for every runway so less opportunities for variety. 6 runways all going east-west. For spotting just imagine this, you are trying to get a photo of a certain aircraft that you know is coming in. Think about what a nightmare it will be trying to guess which of the 6 runways it will use to land/takeoff? Even with a scanner it's hard to just switch positions once you know. The way it is now given a certain arrival/departure pattern there's a good chance to guess where something will land on.

I'm not sure I agree.

OK, you'ld only have 3 or 4 max for landing, so that narrows it down. And besides how different would that be from now. If the wind is SW to NW and UA Oprah 757 is coming in, how do you know what runway it will come in on? 27R, 27L, or 28
I am assuming there has been a great reduction of 4R landings since 27R opened.

Well , depends on wind strenght if 28 is also using for departures you can expect heavy cargo can land on 27L. Europeans usually using 27L with some exceptions.
About Oprah's a/c... Well , I was tracking this bird since it was repainted but always I was too late or I was at work ...
But one day I track N542UA from PDX and I was expecting her to land on 27L - I was tracking other traffic flow from that direction. So I found the key that ATC assign runways that day.
BTW scanner is very helpfull. ORD has delays so if you will hear assigment of runway for departure you got some time to get the spot. I did that last sunday when trying to catch TACA (there was very strange pattern - one runway was used for arrivals - 32R and both 32's for departure).

Now see, that is different from when I was up there. All heavies were landing on 28 except some UA 747 and AA,UA 777. You're a local so I'll trust your word. But that's dissappointing to me.   That is unless you're counting 28 as the old 27L

First of all track them using flightaware. Just put the reg number for search (instead of flight #). If you'll find departure airport you can calculate arrival pattern and find runway assigment. I was tracking today N224UA in new United c/s. Flight was from PEK so I expected rwy 28 for arrival. At 4 pm I took a shot of UAL850 on approach.
Usually when I trying to get some shot on 27L I will look for them on downwind. Then I drive on Mannheim near I-190 bridge and standing on shoulder I'm taking a shot. But this is a while. For 27L photo I was using this place with mark on the map posted above as Runway 27L. But is risky.
Best regards , Gabriel

Thanks for quick reply,
I do this flightaware tracking almost every time i go spotting. I did tracked yesterday N773UA from MUC, but i took pic from my backyard
Tomorrow i suppose this bird will arrive from FRA(as UA941). It is very hard to predict what runways the airplane would use, it depends on plenty of things.

If you want to get ONLY this a/c just set up scanner (if you have) for three frequencies of chicago approach (three runways , one of them is a 133.625 MHz at rwy 28). Then close to arrival time listen to runway assigment of this flight. When you hear it you got 10 maybe 15 minutes to reach the spot. That is what I'm doing. If you have iPhone you can use liveATC to listen chicago approach .
Have fun , Gabriel

Oh yeah that was a day! I catch XA-FPP from I-294 on touch down , but mainly I was there to finally take A6-EHJ. I saw you walking around with monopod , right?
I didn't take Colgan , BTW I have no shots of Colgan yet   , maybe one in winterstorm...
I'm going to catch some unusual cargo's in friday. There should be some interesting arrivals as support for UPS and FDX.

How do you track those cargo jets, couse they are kinda pop-up flights.
If there would be something good on Saturday or Sunday I would go, did you know that G-STBC visited ORD a couple times last week?

Oh! So you were behind me against the building.
They pop-up two, three hours before depature so enough time to get the spot.
Use ftytecomm to track them. Right now I se higher activity of FDX and UPS at ORD so I expecting something rare. I should be nothing international - some domestic support for those two to fit in timeframe...
And BA sending G-STBD too but right now they do not sending anything... They are listed as B772 intead of B77W on flightaware , the same as ANA12 - always listed as B772 but every day we got B777-300  Wink

Flight aware isn't good for tracking European flights. I know that today BA is sending G-STBC, and flightaware shows as it is B77L.
P.S. N53442 in new United's livery is En Route to ORD,arriving at 10:05AM

Looks like arrival will be at 11pm so we can expect departure after 3am. She's gonna stay at north cargo (like other ADB flights years ago). Minutes ago arrival pattern changed so departures right now are from both 32's and 28. If the pattern will stay till tomorrow she's gonna depart from 32R because is close to north cargo terminal.
