Usaf Thunderbird Registration #'s

Tue Nov 09, 2010 2:05 pm

Can anyone help me in retrieving one of the Thunderbird's aircraft registration numbers? I have a couple pictures I would like to submit of Thunderbird #1 but I'm missing that specific information and I'm not sure where to find it since they don't seem to display it on their aircraft like other military, commercial, or general aviation aircraft do. Another bit of information, the pictures were taken last summer (2009) sometime. Don't know if they replaced any of their aircraft since then or not. On another note, how picky are the screener's when it comes to registration numbers? Almost all of the pictures I have seen of the Thunderbird's already on Airliners.net seem to have registration numbers attached.

The Thunderbird position number (i.e. 1,2,3,..) are not specific to one USAF serial number. These decals are taken off and put on based upon the operational dynamics. It is not uncommon to have them taken off at night and put on another sometimes in the morning before a show. This is because an aircraft might be taken down for tech reasons at the last minute. So you best bet is to ask the Thunderbirds which aircraft is flying in which slot on one particular day. I have talked to TBird maintainers before and they have updated me on a day to day basis. However, I can tell you that sometimes, there have been changes after they gave me the update. Remember that there is usually two reserve aircraft at a show.

Several years ago I was in the same predicament, and couldn't get the info I needed from any online source. So, on a whim I sent an e-mail to the Thunderbirds e-mail address, expecting never to hear anything. Lo and behold, in a couple of days I got a reply e-mail listing the registration numbers for the aircraft used in the show I attended. To say the least I was impressed with the USAF.

Yes - I noticed the same thing. Thoroughly professional.
