Good Vid Camera For Sound - Any Reccommendations?

Sun Dec 26, 2010 9:43 am

I would like to know whether there are any good video cameras out there for capturing a wide range of sound without difficulty.

I just use my Canon Ixus 750i at the moment but it gets completely ovwewhelmed by the sound of a DC-3 or IL-18 in the cabin, for example:

Also, note the sound difference between my B707 Take-off and a similar video from the same trip taken by Loran. His seems to pick up the engine sounds much more clearly than mine during take-off:

However, upon landing, mine seems to cope with the reverse thrust better than his:

If there any reasonably priced cameras/vid cameras out there which can cope with such a range of sounds without becoming too distorted; and have good image quality; I would very much appreciate any reccomendations.

Many thanks.

Sony HDR-CX105

All my videos on that channel. However, some with my older Point and Shoot.

The CX105 is good when watching in HD and quite cheap really.

Good luck,

If you want to record real sound, you need an external microphone really. The ones onboard cameras are adequate, but have their limits. A dedicated external mic is best if you want to capture good quality audio.

I was just going to mention the same thing Darren just said, which is quite correct; some camera bodies have a "port" for attaching a cable for external mic, and some don't.

I know my Nikon 300s has one, but I have never even used it for video yet, so I have no idea what it will do, sound wise.

BTW, speaking of sounds made by airplanes................if you ever happen to be at an air show, and they happen to have a fly-over by a F-4 Phantom, there is your chance to record the loudest, noisiest a/c ever built ! It's not the only plane that ever used two GE- J 79 engines, but it is DEFINITELY the noisiest !

Many years ago, I was incredibly fortunate to witness a fly-over by a whole 16 plane squadron of F-4 Phantoms; no words could describe it !

Have fun with your videos, and Happy New Year !
