Your Own Personal Photo Of The Year 2010

Wed Dec 29, 2010 12:59 pm

Self-plug time

Which of your own photos would you regard as your personal photo of the year? And how was your spotting year in general?

For me, it was awesome - some great snow&sun sessions in HAM in February / March, a week at MIA / FLL / OPF in March, the An-225 visiting HAM in April, going to MAN in June, a total 4 trips to LHR - I won't complain..

Plans for 2011 include SXM in April, at least 1 day in AMS, and maybe ZRH. And certainly another few trips to the UK.

My personal photo of the year 2010 is from the Florida trip in March, taken at OPF:

It was my 2000th accepted photo and stands for the biggest number of uploaded photos since I started uploading at A.net in 2004.

May 2011 be equally fruitful.

Wishing you all a happy new year!

Hi all,

From a technical point of view, I have to choose this one:

From a subject point of view, I have to choose this one (it's not every day you get to see the inside of a lunar module!!!):

PS Stefan, maybe I've mentioned it before  , but I love that B-W tail shot!!!

That BOS shot of yours is amazing as well. I just saw Ronald's in the Photog's Choice today - that sure is a special spot, especially after dark.

Cool thread
2010 was indeed a busy one for me. A few assignments and a whole load of fun down in Belgium too
Unfortunately I have to wait to post any images from one of the A2A rides but this was certainly a shot I was really happy with...

This one eluded me for ages but a quick run around on the ramp at BCN made my day where I managed to finally get this one...

Not perfect in any way and can hardly be compared to the Bronco, but hey, I like it.
2011 is gonna be so sweet when I think of it now!

Nice shot - I don't see it every day, but I've been to the Cradle a bunch, it's the closest aviation museum to me. I remember that place when it was a few old airplanes in the back of a dark, dusty hangar - it's come a long way.

Your images are all beautiful!!!

Now it's my turn...
I'd like to start saying that this 2010 has been the year of the change: as a matter of fact, in July (for my birthday), I bought my first DSLR camera, a Canon EOS 450D, whose kit included the standard Canon 18-55 and 75-300, both non-IS.
Well, from then on, I started taking pictures at everything that caught my eye or my imagination (photography takes out of me my hidden creative side): but my favourite subjects are the aircraft. So, I started going more frequently to the local airports (LIN/LIML and MXP/LIMC) and have some practice. My first results were not so good, but time by time, with in trial by error way, I got more experience and my shots were getting better than the first ones. Then, I finally decided to join Airliners.net in order to upload some pictures and see other people's opinion about my shots and to share them with the rest of the world.
I got a lot of rejection in these months (my acceptance ratio is about 30%), but I have never gave up, and I bet in the next year I'll get even better at photography!
As a good take off point I decided to buy the Canon EF 70-200 f/4L USM, as I was suggested by many people: I'd like to thank them very much (there are some here on the forum, see the related topic ), as they have made me do a very good purchase.

Talking about my aircraft shot, this year I have been to Paris Charles de Gaulle, where I spent about two hours spotting nearby the Concorde static display (I still have to edit and upload a lot of shots of that day!).
Then, I have been to Rivolto Air Force Base to join the celebration of the 50th years of Frecce Tricolori Aerobatic Team: I was very disappointed for my inexperience and for my gear, as I had to waste a lot of shots that would have been surely better with a better lens and more experience. I'll do it again next time, with more experience, and, of course, results will be better!
Here I have a shot to post: I like it very much, and it's important for me, despite it is not perfect.

No further trips: all the photos I took next heve been taken in Linate or Malpensa.

For the 2011 I'm planning to go in Paris for Le Bourget Air Show... I hope for somewhere else in addition to the latter!

At the moment, I have only 21 shots here... I'll pick two of them.

Hi all,

Most everyone else's photographic skills blow mine out the water, but I've definitely had a good year spotting and with my uploads. I've had some productive outings at SFO, SJC, STS, and SAN this year; the only regret I have is not having had a chance to get back to Europe in 2010.

As far as the photos go, I guess my favorite, due to the subject matter, was this one:

Another highlight was finally succeeding in uploading a few shots from my hometown airport of SAN.

Hopefully 2011 will bring some good opportunities to photograph some rare or exciting aircraft.

Good question..It is like asking a parent to choose which of his/her kids are the favorite.

That said, I have a personal attachment to this shot because of the human side of it. I had got the chance to discuss (albeit briefly) with the commander about cameras/lenses during a shuttle ferry flight. At that time he was training for his upcoming flight. Almost a year and a half later I got him on short final. A few weeks ago, he left the astronaut corp to go back to the Navy. So this is Alan Pointdexter on his final moments of his final shuttle flight...hence the human dimension to it.

I have a handful of experiences that remind me of a great 2010 and can't include one without the rest.
We started planning the flight below several weeks out from the day of the flight with four helicopters but the RNZAF came up with six.

Lots of time and effort went into seeing this happen, was nice to have a P-40 chase it!!

We headed out to photograph the Mustang and the owner bought his Albatross along as well which was flying in the area.

Never noticed it until I was looking through the shots on the computer.

Finally, New Zealand's four flying Beavers, when the pilot of the lead aircraft saw this photo he said "I have been waiting for a photo like that for 49 years, great stuff, well done" That comment alone made the whole year more than worth it.

My proudest moment was this picture taken at Salinas Airshow in CA I went to San Francisco Fleet week to try and get the traditional insanely low and fast Blue Angel singleton picture but some guy in front of me hoisted his child onto his shoulders just at the wrong moment for me BooHoo.

Holy crap @ Darren and Chris. Those shots are gorgeous! May I ask the setting that were used?

As for myself, it was a very meager year for me concerning uploads, with only 76 photos accepted in 2010. However, I recently refound the joy to travel more around Europe like I did a few years ago, so I will probably have more good material in 2011.
When it comes to the shots, these are some of my favorites:

Sometime we get a 747 for a low ILS approach as part of a checkflight after maintance. For an airpor tthat has a 1800m runway and not that many heavy movements, it remains a wonderful sight. In september, things FINALLY got together the way I had hoped for so long. A low sun, from the right angle and a 747 making the above mentioned approach. I couldn't be happier! Here's a photo from one of the local spotters which shows me taking my shots.

The other one is a more recent one, namely:

Like the caption says, it reminds me of one of the best holidays EVER. This place is just so friggin' beautiful. Luxury resorts and only accesable by boat or airplane. It doesn't take a lot of brains to realize that this place will be stunning then. I guess you could say that I'm also a bit of a fan of remote airports like this, so it was a no-brainer for me that I wanted to visit this "airport", while the rest of the group went into the small town of Tortuguero.
On my way to the airport, I was walking on the beach (which is right beside it!) and I encountered a few baby sea turtles who just came from their nest and were making their way to the ocean. For a moment I seriously was the happiest person on the world. I can't even begin to describe how awesome that feeling was.

Kas

One of the aircraft I have been wanting to capture for some time. It visited Nashville several years ago and from what I understand, left with a bad impression of the airport services. Recently, it stopped into Atlanta for a few weeks. I rearranged my schedule and went down there to capture it. Thanks to a couple of close friends, I was able to get some great shots!

I post this, not for the creativity involved, but for the simple fact that I have been wanting to capture this bird for some time, and I did in 2010.

I would say 2010 is important for me as all my photos were accepted in 2010 except the first one which was on 31 Dec 09. I would like to share three.

1. Nothing special about this one but this is the first photo added to DB in 2010.

Hi

This year was great! I've been to RIAT and it was awesome! Heathrow is also really nice... In Portugal, I've went to some neighbor islands (LPAZ & LPPD), Coimbra, Cascais, Monte Real, Sintra, Portimão, Faro and finished my year living in the mainland (@ Lisbon)!

If I need to pick one for this year, it would probably be this one:

My first single-engine flight! And this is the aircraft that I'll learn to fly, so it was a really nice flight!

And a happy new year!!

Wow, I had a whopping 7 photos taken in 2010 accepted in the DB. I haven't been very active in aviation photography, especially during the second half of the year. I've been focusing on other types of photography and other sites.

I guess if I had to choose from my 2010 shots in the DB, none I feel are great IMO, it would be this one. The timing worked well and it was selected by my station manager as the image used for 2010 local employee birthday cards. That's kinda cool.

I have taken aviation shots throughout the year that I haven't tried uploading to the DB. This has to be my favorite example.

It's ofcourse a very hard choise, of all of the pictures you have been taking.
2010 was a crazy year for me, especially on the Aviation side..
I have been to St Maarten, St barths, Boeing field, Everett, Reykjavik Iceland, Manchester, Paris CDG, Open dagen luchtmacht (EGHR, Gilze Rijen) and to various other airports in Holland. A lot of aviation!

My favourite photo just has to be this one... No doubt.

Hah, damn! Suresh. That's one hell of a lens, must be awesome to work with that. That's neat!

Best wishes for 2011!

All taken with a lens which could actually double as a lens cap for Suresh's lens.

thanks

Happy New Year to all!

My 2010 was fairly weak due to my camera being out of commission for several months (massive fall). Recently moved to the UK for a course, so I'm certainly looking foward to some spotting up here!

2010's hightlight, as seen on a long awaited short trip: (Didn't even notice the OPEN cockpit window until after it got accepted!)

Doesn't surprise me I wish I had A380's around here to try night shots as well.
Darren's shot is a beauty also.

Cheers.
Let me start by wishing everybody a wonderful 2011. Wishing everybody peace and respect for the upcoming year.
As for my favourite moment in 2010, I have to elect a couple of photos done in the same day and the reason why these are my favourite is simple. I got them far from any airport. Funny how we spend so much time near the fence and end up having nice frames far from an airport.

no drill or training in this situation. It was the real deal, with a huge forest fire close to houses, factories and other facilities. Luckily all ended up well.
See you all next year.

Hello all !

Question). What's rarer than a Boeing 747 at Newcastle (NCL) airport ?

Answer). A ''smoking'' Boeing 747 at Newcastle (NCL) airport !

My own personal favourite of 2010 :

Wow, nice catch! That's the sort of interesting find that I most enjoy discovering in the database.

This one was just lucky - funny you go up expecting to shoot a Starduster and a Waco and your best photo of the flight is of a B-17....

This one is my personal favorite, for general composition and the stellar lighting we were afforded that day. The view counter (and my first PC!) agreed more with the B-17 though....

2010 was not such a good year for me (lots of PC problems that prevented me from editing shots...), but this one I liked a lot, although it is nothing special, compared to all the other amazing shots on here:

I am particularly proud of these two.

This one was sort of by accident:

This one is my personal favourite from 2010. An F15 low level in Wales with the iconic, snow capped, Snowdon peak in the background.

I was at Dobbins ARB for the media day of their airshow in mid-October of 2008 and saw that aircraft taxi out of Lockheed Martin's building and take off into the clouds. What a small world.

Some lovely captures in this thread! For me, 2010 has been a good year for aviation photography with various trips around Europe. I don't upload much to a.net however I manage to upload one of my all time favourite shots taken at Amsterdam at the start of a very cold day, back in January.
