Your 2011 Spotting Plans?

Wed Jan 12, 2011 4:34 pm

Hello,

I was just wondering all of your spotting plans for 2011! This is going to be an exciting year for me, an emerging photographer and all. I have consoulted with friends and we made a list of 5 worldwide spotting places (Roughly 1 a year) and heres the list in planned chronological order:

1.) AMS
2.) JFK
3.) HKG
4.) LHR
5.) SYD

I usually stay domestic, but I feel like branching out and seeing the world!

What are you planning?

Happy Spotting!

AMS, CDG and LHR; the latter to coincide with the Champions League final although I'm not sure which airport(s) would be used for that. Unless it's two English teams of course then the answer is: none.

YZF in the summer and the Reno races.

Possibly JFK in the fall.

Good Morning!
It's going to be hard to beat the way my spotting year started out, but I'm hoping to make it to SXM, JFK, MAN and SYD would be nice.. Would like to get out to VCV or MHV to do some storage shots also!

After a good 2010 with FIDAE, the Argentina Air Fest and 3 trips to Embraer in SJK, it will be difficult to even come close to it this year! There's no FIDAE and I suspect that the Air Fest won't be as good as last year.

I hope I can make it to BFI and OSH this year... but I highly doubt it!

Other than my home airports (SEA, BFI, PAE), I'm hoping to spot at some which are further afield but in driving distance - BLI, YVR, PDX - and a few in places I end up because of work or family (LAS, ROC, EWR/JFK/LGA).

But I also hope to get really far afield to TPE, SHA, or ICN this year if I can on my first trip to Asia.

You'd better shake Gav's curse off before you attempt anything!!!

Don't go spotting with Gary in 2011, else you'll encounter masses of cloud!

I made this wicked travel plan to tour around Scandinavia for a week or 2, but all in all it's going to cost me a little less than 1000 euro, which is a bit too much since I'm very close to having saved the money I want to start with PPL flying lessons. Nevertheless a very interesting itinerary with 5 new aircraft types and 5 new airports! (If I sparked your interest, look here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2073152/kljefghalkwrgmvsliemhuvser.jpg)

The travel plans to HEL will probably go through, as I want to fly the (in Europe relatively uncommon) B717. Domesticly I will for sure be photographing at the airport I work at (GRQ) and AMS too ofcourse. I hope to hitch atleast 1 ride with a local operator here (meaning new in-flight shots + maybe new airport). I don't have any holiday plans yet, so maybe that will get me a new airport aswell.

I'm leaving London and moving north to Chester so i imagine MAN will be my new local so that will get visited once or twice and i will also now have the mach loop on my doorstep(ish) so i will try and get down there once or twice.

Hopefully get out to LAS for my annual trip and no doubt stop by LAX on the way. Would like to get JFK done to catch up with some good friends and do some shooting.

A few euro domestics are likely too, deffo INN as one of them.

The last major trip of the year will be SIN/HKG for my visit to the Singapore Grand Prix again.

Just the home airport (AGS) for now. DL 757s (up from CRJ200s) visit for a week in April.

Plan on going to SXM sometime in the early summer

Also plan on a west coast run when visiting family at both SFO and FAT. Prolly do the Air Museum at MER again.

And moving to PIT in July/August for school

Unless I get any invites to anything special - I've got nothing planned this year.

I'm only doing photography where I can get a photo that will be unique, or I have access that other people don't have. I got pretty bored. Pretty much everyone else at my local airport has much better access to get far more unique photos than I do. I can't keep up with that - and it's not for lack of trying.

So I've got some different photography goals this year that are non-aviation.

My plan is to take photos and not having to delete 75% or so of them and try to go for quality not quantity.   Also try and fly to other places but i rarely get the opportunity but that comes with the package of living at home and other commitments.

I often only keep a few photos - I have no interest in processing 20 images and uploading them all - that's boring and takes too much time. It's often difficult to get a photo that doesn't look the same as what everyone has seen before, or that hasn't been done to death already.

Like you I rarely get the opportunity to fly to other places - I do have finances, but they don't stretch so far to fly abroad seemingly every 3 or 4 weeks - my job (which is a great one) doesn't take me flying abroad at all, nor do I have that much leave to use. My finances also don't stretch so far as to be paying to fly above airports for photos, or paying my way into towers.

CPD,
agree with you. I started a couple of month ago and I want to know my local airport spotts very well but I need time
I really want to take something unusual what will pull your look to my photos.
I also want to visit airshow as I never been before and I assume that it will be great experience and lots of emotions.
Have a goods shots!

Most of my spotting trips are unplanned. They just sort of happen when the opportunity presents itself.

However, I am planning a trip to ATL this summer. There is a renaissance property that buts up to a few of their main runways and has an excellent view of the property. The only problem is that it's south-facing. I plan to visit on or near the summer solstice to try and avoid any backlighting issues.

I'd LOVE to visit SXM but I'm not sure that's in the cards for me this year.
Have I mentioned I love planes? :-)

I'd like MIA and LAX in December 2011, but let's see, let's see

I guess my goal is to get used to my new Canon 100-400L, because I'm not quite up to database scratch yet in what little I've taken with it so far. Locations? I'm unlikely to go to any airports that I haven't been to before, except maybe CDG. And since the screeners appear to be allergic to anything I take outside of LAX, I guess that's where I'll focus my attention.

Anyone going to be in SJU or SXM in mid-May? The HFF's DC-7 in Eastern colors will be flying around the Caribbean around then. Expected landing at SXM is 6pm on Monday, May 16, 2011:

Will also visit the wonderful POPHAM for light stuff. But will try to venture to WYCOMBE,DENHAM,BLACKBUSHE & WHITE WALTAM again. Its been far to long.....

Weather permitting i will go to the the Air Britain flyin at NORTH WEALD. Also the Flying Ledgends show at DUXFORD. And maybe a day at one of the Shuttworth collection flying days at OLD WARDEN.

Should be a good year with any luck....

I'll be spending July back in the UK, do the shows and a load of airports just to catch up. I'll be at AMS in April for a few days and going back to MIA in May. I'll also be over in the UK for a while in March.
I think Cuba's on the list too, it really needs to be done. I need to start using my cameras a lot more now. LAX/JFK/MIA (again!) will get done in the Autumn.
Should get down to Turkey for the airshow there and Belgium will probably be getting hit again.

Well, I think I won't travel so much as some of you are going to do...
So, first of all, I'll continue to go at my local airport, Milan Linate.
Then, I'd like to go to some other "new" airports in northern Italy, such as Bergamo and Genoa.
A military airport could be ok too, but I still have to know which are the regulations about an whether the spotting is allowed too, as the last thing I want is to have legal problems for my spotting activity.

But for now, I have booked a flight on the June 25... I will go back at LeBourget airshow!!! (2009 edition was just spectacular... It was my very first big airshow).

Then, I think to attend one of the local airshows, since I am dependent on the Eurofighter, the Tornado, the Spartan and, last but not least, the Frecce Tricolori aerobatic team.

I hope to get very good shots with my new 70-200 f/4 L!

I wish you all the best for this year,
Matteo

Agreed. This is why I most enjoy exploring forgotten corners of sleepy, out-of-the-way airports. I love discovering old airframes "put out to pasture", so to speak, and documenting their fates and whereabouts. These environments are where you tend to find rare and unusual types, as well.

I have zero desire to ever shoot a single frame at SXM. If you were to place a coin at every spot an SXM photo has been shot, I suspect you could walk from one end of the beach to the other without ever touching a grain of sand!

True indeed. Airshows are another thing I won't do any more.

I'm interested in taking good photos - not having some person shoving in front of me, or a head appearing in my picture. Given that none of the local airshows cater for the serious photographers who aren't full time media representatives - I'm not going to bother. Paying $460 plus transport costs to take a photo of the back of someone's head - and then have no rights to be able to license or sell what good images I've taken? No thanks.

Good thing about 2 "local" shows we have here, Gothenburg Air Show, and the Danish Air Force show have dedicated areas/events for a limited number of spotters. At Gothenburg Aero Show it's a dedicated area closer to the runway than the usual public stands, and attendance to the fly ins prior to the show. Very nice! Haven't had the opportunity to attend them yet though, but will try this year.

Definitely doesn't happen here - I'm sure they think of us as vermin - such is the apparent disdain for anyone who takes photos that is not full-time employee of the media. Never mind that we often take better photos than some of the media photographers do.

My definite plans:

PHX, LAX, LAS, YVR from spring, summer and fall.

Airports I am considering to spot as I work out vacation plans based on money and time.
Basically places I want to go this year.

LHR, HEL, MAN, Axalp, Wales, SXM, SEA, PDX, SFO.

Europe and places like the Caribbean will be at least 1 week worth of stay while US cities will be like 4 days.
