Caution Re: Lanzarote

Mon Jan 31, 2011 8:24 pm

Just last week got back from a photography trip to Lanzarote, where they were in the process of completing a new inner perimeter fence. Luckily it only really affected us on our last day but it does mean that the classic runway 03 spots are now either gone or very limited.

The beach in the morning is still great for landers but the gap in the fence running along the eastern perimeter is now gone. This of course was the famous line-up spot where you got the lovely hills/villages in the background.

The afternoon/evening spot has also been affetced - you can't get clean shots over the fence now but you can still stand on the piles of rocks further back, although the new fence does intrude into the frame.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the update, Karl. Man, you do get around. Did you have a car, or where did you stay?

My hat off to Mr. O'Leary and his wonderfully cheap fares!

We stayed in Puerto del Carmen and had a car. We were looking at Matagorda due to its proximity to the airport (10-15 minute walk) but we found a superb hotel in Puerto which was cheap enough to also allow us a car for a similar price to an 'airport' hotel.

I enjoyed the photography (and also the great weather) but it is one slow airport with limited traffic! I'm glad to have done it but if I return to the island it will be for the excellent nightlife and not for the airport!

Incidently I've just this minute had some photo's from ACE accepted. As you can see the morning landers are unchanged but you can see the new fence in the Tommy Cook shot...

As expected departures from runway 21 also remain unaffected...

Hey Karl,

I have a sneaky feeling I was there also at the same time as yourself, as all the aircraft and angles look similar to what I caught I was there with the girlfriend from 19th to 25th Jan and ended up on the beach along side the runway for most of the trip, as well as the pile of rocks on the other side.

A shame about the 2nd fence, in certain areas it's about a foot higher than the older fence. At the threshold of RWY 03, I was able to stand on the highest rock, although as the top of it was slanted, I was close to falling off at some points.

I noticed several lens sized holes along the outer older fence, a shame they are no longer usable.

By the way, did you happen to see a SAS 737 depart (Sunday I think) with fuel leaking from the wing?

I was in Frankfurt Hahn at the weekend and a guy there said they are going to take down the old fence leaving just the new one. Anyone else heard this?

We asked an airport employee if they planned to take down the old fence and he said no. Looking at it practically it'd involve too much work as the old drainage ditch would need too much attention.

Dave, we were there 17-21 Jan so did not see a Sunday. I was the young(er) guy with two older fellas.

That's a shame, Lanzarote was one of the best places for photography in my opinion.
