Images Fine In PhotoShop, But Purple On Web

Thu Feb 03, 2011 4:53 am

This has only recently happened, but I think I've screwed something up with Windows or with Adobe Gamma - pics are looking great in RAW, I process them in LightRoom and then send them to Adobe Elements 4 or CS5, and they look great there too. No purple hue or cast. Save the image as a JPG, it even looks great in Windows Photo Gallery.

Then - I try to upload to the web - and the images are horribly purple. A.net, my website, FB, any of them - and if I right-click on the JPG and "Open in Internet Explorer" I get the same purple crap.

So what did I screw up? How do I fix it? Needless to say it's quite irritating!

Here's an example - the image on the left is as it came out of the camera, and how it is viewed in PhotoShop or Windows Photo Gallery. I used the "Save for web" option ONLY FOR THIS EXAMPLE, just so you can see the difference. I usually just use "Save as..." not "Save for web."

Any help - as always - is greatly appreciated!

Typical sign of mismatching color space.

Make sure all of your programs are using the same color profile, preferably sRGB (since that is what you are using on the web). When I export my final image out of Photoshop, I usually make sure that I uncheck the "embed color profile" checkbox.

Thanks for the reply Steve - I tried unchecking "ICC Profile: sRGB IEC61966-2.1" and it actually save the purple in the image. If I open that file in any program it's now purple.

Yeah, the unchecking alone wouldn't fix it... that was more meant as a side note.

Check if Lightroom is using sRGB and that passes the image to PS as sRGB. Then lastly make sure that PS is using sRGB as the default color profile.

Also, try the following: In your current workflow, when you have the image in PS, go to Edit > Convert to Profile. What does it currently say under "Source Space"?

Thanks again Steve. There is no difference in the appearance of the images from LR to PS that I can see, but I'm not sure how to dig into this either...

Profile: ProPhoto RGB

There you have it. You are working with ProPhoto RGB, not sRGB. At this point, choose sRGB as the Destination Space Profile and the convert the image. Once it is converted, make sure it looks good and then export it just like before. Now the JPG should look the way you expect it.

The question is why you are working with a ProPhoto color profile. Are you shooting in RAW or JPG? If JPG, does your camera save it as ProPhoto? If you shoot RAW, make sure LR exports the image to PS with sRGB and not ProPhoto. Check your LR preferences for such settings. Lastly, check your PS settings and make sure you are using sRGB as your default profile (I think it is under Edit > Color Profile, but I don't know for sure, as I don't have my computer with me right now).

When this happened a few hours ago, I was using Lightroom and then PhotoShop Elements. The colors got screwed up, so I downloaded the CS5 trial version. That is the one I checked, and the ProPhoto was the setting I found when I followed your instructions.

Just as weird as all of this came up - it's gone. I'm now editing pics in CS5 and saving them and the purple ghost has disappeared. Maybe it's a fluke, but I'll keep you posted. Still very irritating that it got screwed up in the first place!

Thank you Steve for your help!

Lightroom always works in ProPhoto. You can export to other color spaces, but it does relative colorimetric transforms and you can't configure that. I always export out as ProPhoto to PS, then when I'm done in PS, use Save for Web.

My advice is to use "Save for Web" when saving your JPEGs, as it has a handy checkbox for converting to sRGB. It'll remember it when it's set and it always uses a Perceptual transform.
