LHR 09 Worth It?

Mon Feb 07, 2011 4:26 pm

Looks like the wind will be from the South tomorrow so 09s in use. I get the impression photography spots at this end of LHR are quite a bit harder to get to than the 27s end. I was planning to take my camcorder and get some video but I am seriously wondering if it's worth going to LHR at all. I don't get to London centre until 11:30 so it would be nealy 13:00 when I got to LHR. Given that it gets dark at 16:30 and the extra time to get to the 09 spots I'm not sure if it's worth it for about 3 hours.

Is it possible to walk from T5 to the spots mentioned in this thread? 9L Spotting At LHR (by MichaelEI Jan 5 2011 in Aviation Photography) It looks like a bit of a tangle of roads!

Andy,

Myself and Gary King are looking at LHR tomorrow.

If you're in the area anyway I'd say give it a go - two hours at LHR can produce a lot of traffic, with the best of it arriving after 13:00. The embankment for 09L isn't too far from T5, and is made that much better by the fact that you need not worry about the dreaded 15:00 runway swap.

Do you mean the spot marked "2" in the thread I lined to? Is is walkable from T5 that's my main worry. If it is how to you do it as it looks like a lot of big and busy roads!

Do you have any idea if that spot would be any good for video? ie unobstructed views while panning.

Not sure exactly how you would walk but I know people do it and I've heard it's about 15 minutes. The map seems to give a clear route and I'm pretty sure there are pavements (of a sort).

And yes, the embankment is spot 2. Spot 1 is slightly closer but they are far too 'underneath' for my liking. Either spot is completely unobstructed so no problems with photo's or videos.

09L embankment will be perfect for panning video. But you wont get them touching down as thats out of view. From the embankment you will get photos like this....

Remember though that if their landing on 09L you can still get 09R take off photos from the T4 embankment. Like this ..

Is the embankment walkable from T5?

I'm arriving sunday at Terminal 4, putting the wife up in Yotel for 6 hours, and going spotting. The Underground to Terminal 5 appears pretty zippy.

Just been looking at some other forums and I haven't seen anything saying exactly how to walk there but I have seen posts by people who have walked.
I think it might just be a case of "free-styling" it around the roads. Looks like some care might be needed crossing a few of them!

If I do end up going tomorrow I will be sure to post a message with walking instructions.

It looks like the winds is a bit undecided. The TAF from where http://www.checkwx.com/wxmain/code/EGLL
270° at 9 kts at 09:00
170° at 10 kts at 17:00

Would 170/10 definitely mean 09L arrivals? I wonder what it's doing between 09:00 and 17:00!

In November I couldn't find any info on how walkable it is from T5 so I just hedged my bets and took the Hotel Hoppa from T1 to the Thistle Hotel and it was an easy 15 minute walk from there.

Thanks for all the help guys. I've decided however that I don't think it's worth the trip out there tomorrow given that I have other things to do in London and I have to get back to central london for about 18:00 to get some food then train home.

Andy S

PS - If anyone tries walking T5 to 09L spots via that roundabout I'd be very interested to know how it's done for future reference.

Pity you didnt come... The weather here is fantastic at the moment (for the first time in ages). That said there landing on 27L so the 09's are not in use.

Yeah the weather was beautiful in London yesterday. From what little I could see from central london I got the impression the runways switched 09s to 27 and back during the afternoon, was that the case? I could only see slight glimpses of planes so I might be totally wrong!

They stayed on the 27's all day i think. The normal change from 27L to 27R at 3pm as per normal. Thats what i saw out my office window anyway.

It must have just been that I couldn't see them very well!

It also shows how inaccurate the weather forecasts are. I looked late Monday night and it said SE most of the day and SW at about 17:00 for LHR.

Andy,

Like a lot of airports, LHR has its preferred runway as 27, so if the easterly winds are only very light they tend (tend being the operative word here!) to stick with the norm.

MAN and EMA do exactly the same.

I was in SW London all day yesterday and it was 27s from at 10.30 right through to 23.00, the light was perfect all day but sadly I couldn't take advantage.

I've noticed it at EMA (arrivals from the North are over my house) but wasn't ware LHR did the same. Something to remember for next time so thanks for the info. It's a pity there is no live ATC type thing to make sure whats happening at LHR before making a trip down there.

I often notice that when theres a slight NNE wind, LGW truns to 08R ops while LHR stays on the 27s, this is interesting, iam guessing its because 08 is nearer NNE wind than 09.
