Photography At PHX

Sun Mar 27, 2011 8:45 pm

Hello,

I know this has been covered briefly in the past. However, I had wondered if anyone could supply me with some tips on shooting at Phoenix. Having not been before, it would be good to know which photography locations should be visited at what times of day to avoid back lit shots.

I won't have access to a car whilst on my stay, and would like to get a bit of variety as to the type of photos that I achieve. I'd particularly like to shoot the special scheme US Airways aircraft, which I presume and hope is relatively easy considering the size of the airlines base at PHX.

Finally, are things like AeroMexico, Air Canada, Frontier, JetBlue etc. easily shoot able?

Many thanks,

bmi.

There are tonnes of threads in this forum about KPHX. Do a search and you'll find more than a brief discussion.

Depending on where you are staying, it can be a long drive to the airport - metro PHX is very spread out. Once at the airport though there are shuttles between terminals so it is easy to get around.

Yes, these are very doable. This time of year at the end of the day if the 25/26 runways are in use (wind from the west, as it usually is in the evening), go to the top east side of the Terminal 4 garage and you can shoot arrivals on 26 in the afternoon, and as the sun gets lower shoot the taxi across the bridge from the north to the south complexes on taxiway Romeo. These are from T4:

If the wind is from the east and the 7/8 runways are active, go to terminal 3 garage and shoot the terminal 3 area and the taxiway Tango.

In the morning you need to be on the south side, which requires a car. All the above photos are evening shots from the terminal.

Have fun!

I put all my info from a trip last year here:
http://www.plane-mad.com/airport-spo...a/phoenix-sky-harbor-phx-kphx.html

All spots face north so there shouldn't be issues with the sun. Without a car you'll be limited to the car parks which are good, might face a problem with the heat for the summer though, during my visit in March it wasn't too bad but I'd think it would be a problem later than that. A day on top of any of the car parks and you should get all the US special schemes as US use the gates right below you on that side of the airport.

If theres any chance of getting a car then I'd get one, you'll stuggle to get anything on the southern runways without one.
